Deseret News is owned by the LDS church so they are basically BYU's mouth piece. They paint quite a bit different POV than some bloggers and media people.

The BE is intriguing to them as a missionary vehicle.

I wouldn't be surprised if Basketball is in their minds too. Let's face it, it isn't a marriage. It's a scheduling arrangement that will have a fixed contractual term and that too might appeal to them to test the waters.

Unless they get an offer from the Big 12 or Pac 12, which both seem unlikely, I think BYU will be in the Big East by at least 2013, possibly sooner since they are independent.

What are they planning to do, convert Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova, Georgetown, Marquette, DePaul and Notre Dame into Mormon institutions?

BYU is just leaking this stuff to try to gain negotiating leverage. Same reason the Big East has started leaking stuff about being interested in SD State.
