I just have to give a big shout out to a "plucky" young woman who has been a bit player for years on her team, but has been everything she could be when called upon by her team. Very happy for her right now. Her name:

Madison Cable. http://espn.go.com/womens-college-b...ging-injury-riddled-notre-dame-fighting-irish

Don't know if she can sustain it. I'd bet against it, but it could be a stupid bet. Gotta say: Well done Madison.

I can't disagree with you. She has had several good games this year.

Given the foot issues she went through her freshman year (and is still playing in pain to some degree), it's really great to see her get a chance to show her complete game. Always a great "glue" player, she's now showing more of her offensive game. The other "dirty work" player on ND was Hannah Huffman, the 5'9" guard who was playing some high post yesterday because, well, she had to.

One of the best at accomplishing much with little natural athletic skills.

I have always like Cable---tough kid. However, I can't say she had little athletic skills without a definition.
She alone put Notre Dame into the Championship game last year. Albeit, she was in the right place at the right time with the right mind set. Had she not made the final basket against USC --no Championship game for ND. Muffet has a knack of selecting "role players" who are tough and tenacious . Mallory comes to mind easily.

Brittany Mallory is a great example. After her last year of playing hoops, she played on the ND Women's Lacrosse Team that spring...and did well!
Another current role player is Hannah Huffman. After Cable hit the put-back against SC, Huff came in to harass Tiffany Mitchell on her last shot. Hope that MM continues to find room on her roster for these types of players....

Notre Dame kids are more like UConn than any other team. They play great team defense, they hustle, they have heart, they listen to the coach, they pass well, and they have a very high IQ. Muffitt and Geno are pretty similar. Both coaches know that role players/bench players are ingredients in Championship runs. Too many coaches today would rather have another TOP RATED kid and would be gleeful if all 15 scholarships(?) were given to rated players. Geno & Muffitt know better.
Cable and Huffman could easily be sitting on UConn's bench. Those kids & that type player are the saviors of WBB.
IMHO there are two reasons why/where the similarities end with Geno & Muffitt. One--Geno is a better coach. It might be close to some people, but it is clear that he is better (CD & staff push it over the top for sure.) Second - IMO Geno gets players who are a smidge better and after 4 years they have more developed skills (I guess this brings in the coaching again.)
Anyway, I love watching hustling, smart BB players. DePaul was fun to watch. I liked Iowa last year and Dayton too.
Final note - Notre Dame will compete to the end, but without the two bigs I don't think it is going to be pretty.

Again--nice analysis. Geno likes Gym rats with skills and dedication--not necessarily the top 4 in the country.
Obviously for a number of years now Muffet and Geno are the top two coaches/programs!! Muffet, in years past, used Freshmen much earlier and in big games, where Geno was reluctant to do so--I liked that and now Geno is using his Frosh. Absolutely, without a doubt, and by record, Geno is the better coach.
I too liked the DePaul and Dayton games--both had unbelievable first halves. DePaul hung around until late in the 4th quarter, Dayton's demise was started at the beginning of the 2nd half. Both great games for a BB fan (men or women).

Agree with you, Philly C. Hope Little miss muffit shows class...never sure which one of her personalities is going to show up.

BTW, I love Dayton. Great team to watch. And Iowa, they play like knuckleheads sometimes, but they got the most gorgeous bench player in the nation: Claire Till. :)
