Yes, especially given that she missed 13 games over her last two years.was 3rd after Maya and Tina... wow, that's a heck of a feat (until Stewie took over)
I miss KML
Which undoubtedly cost her 200-250 points. Still, she did ok. She might have passed Tina but could never have caught Maya. Fourth best scorer in UConn history ain't chopped liver.Yes, especially given that she missed 13 games over her last two years.
Come this spring let me know your call on the Preakness, will ya?When K arrived, I told Eric that she likely would finish either 2nd or 3rd in career scoring. She tied for 3rd and might have gotten to 2nd without the injuries and illness. I was confident that K could and would put the ball in the hoop.
So UC, should we infer from your analysis that KML was in good condition? So this thread got me wondering because the 1990s WCBB schedules were typically about 4 games shorter than the current ones, so players like Lobo and Bascom did their damage in fewer games and one of the reasons Geno gives for 'the basket' was the limited minutes Sales played in most of her games because the score was so lopsided. There are now 9 members of the 2000 point club - below are their stats including points per minute.
1. Maya Moore - 3036 pts. in 154 games and 4683 minutes - .648 points per minute
2. Tina Charles - 2346 pts. in 152 games and 3869 minutes - .606
3. Breanna S. - 2182 pts. in 125 games and 3492 minutes - .625
4. Kaleena ML - 2178 pts. in 142 games and 4129 minutes - .527
4. Nykesha S. - 2178 pts. in 137 games and 3511 minutes - .620
6. K. Bascom - 2177 pts. in 120 games and 3456 minutes - .630
7. Diana T. - 2156 pts. in 144 games and 4218 minutes - .511
8. K. Wolters - 2141 pts. in 137 games and 3144 minutes - .681
9. Rebecca L. - 2133 pts. in 126 games and 3572 minutes - .597
So on a per minute basis Wolters is #1 followed by Moore, Bascom and Stewart
On a points per game basis Moore leads at 19.71 followed by Bascom at 18.14 and Stewart now at 17.46 (she has just passed Lobo this year who is at 16.92 and could climb past Bascom.) KML is #8 and DT is #9
On a minutes per game basis Moore leads at 31.58, the only one to average more than 30 minutes per game - followed by DT at 29.29 and KML at 29.08 Bascom at 28.80, Lobo at 28.35, Stewart at 27.94, then Sales* at 25.63, Charles at 25.45, and trailed by Wolters at 22.94 (can we say conditioning?! Moving those big bodies takes a lot of energy!)
So while KML definitely lost some games, she didn't exactly get cheated on her minutes.
Also note that Geno's rationale for Sales' basket isn't quite as clear cut as she had already played more games and more minutes than Bascom to set the record, though fewer minutes per game.
*NB. Sales games is inflated by 1 (the basket!) so should really be 25.81 minutes per game.

Yes they did, as did a number of others who didn't reach the 2000 point plateau but feature in the record books on per-game stats. So UC, should we infer from your analysis that KML was in good condition? YES! (But she did walk off the court instead of run once or twice! )
Seriously, I didn't realize Geno had cited the minutes thing as a rationale for "the basket." Seems pretty weak in light of the games played differential. What he meant was that if he had let her play four more minutes in one game over her 136 games before the injury, she would have broken the record, and at 25.8 minutes a game she ended up playing fewer minutes per game than any of the non-center 2000 point scorers at Uconn.
One thing I hope we can all agree on is that those old-timers (Bascom, Wolters, Lobo) acquited themselves pretty well.
I just thought Kaleena was an easy call. She was a top 10 HS player as a soph, a top 3 player her junior year, and the top player as a senior. The Lewis Launch was everything it was said to be.Come this spring let me know your call on the Preakness, will ya?
One take from this is that Maya was an Iron Woman. She played, whether she was sick or hurt. And she scored at a prolific per-minute rate as well.So this thread got me wondering because the 1990s WCBB schedules were typically about 4 games shorter than the current ones, so players like Lobo and Bascom did their damage in fewer games and one of the reasons Geno gives for 'the basket' was the limited minutes Sales played in most of her games because the score was so lopsided. Some thoughts on various comments:
2. Moore and Charles are the only two to have shared NPOY in the same year which made for a very dominant team. Lobo and Wolters played some of their years with two other players who became NPOYs (Jen and each other), Nykesha played with three NPOY (Kara, Rebecca, and Jen), KML with two (Moore and Breanna), DT played with one (Sue), Breanna and Bascom played with none (unless Moriah splits with Breanna this year which I think unlikely.)
