All-American caliber players- we haz them!

per @DougFeinberg #UConn is first team with four players to receive preseason All-American votes since team started in 95-96 season

Well, let's not hope for a repeat of 1995-96!

Nice headline by the Washington Post.... LINK

"Ogwumike, Sims and Thomas highlight women’s basketball All-America team"

I am trying to think of what "legitimate" reason this would be the headline.....

No great reason, I'm sure........;)

Question: do local papers get to write their own headlines for AP-sourced articles? If so, Thomas obviously gets the headline as a local product - and the other two are both repeat members and seniors.

Also, if their policy is to use the same headlines for both paper and online versions, there is a limited amount of column space in the paper version so some editing is in order. 'Sims' is nice and short while Mosqueda-Lewis is a longish name, and if you add her name you should also add Stewart's. By that time it's no longer a highlight that gets people to read further; you've put every name in the headline.

IMO, this is just the way the cookie happened to crumble re: headline/title editing.

Well nice try to be "level headed" about it. But, if the headline was "Thomas Highlights..." I'd buy your local angle. If it said "Seniors Sims, Thomas....." then I might buy that angle. But to just list those three it leaves the reader to assume that there is something "less" about the remaining two members of the team. I have trouble with the premise that Stewie and KML are "lowlights" on that team. Stewie is a legitimate pre-season POY candidate IMO.

I don't buy this is the result of crumbled cookies, but it's not really a big deal to me either. Just "interesting".

I go with Geno - having 4 players make the two lists is pretty special indeed! (see quote in WaPo article).

1) All three are seniors 2) all three are repeaters 3) it is a cliche but true that it is easier to stand out when you are not surrounded by equally, or almost equally, outstanding players 4) I think all the players know that when they choose to come to UC0nn they increase their chances of winning a NC and decrease their chances of being AA 5) I look forward eagerly to the games in which their UConn counterparts will go up against the new 3 to see.

AP does not dictate headlines - local paper decision (as well as being able to edit a column at least by removing some - not sure about changes.)
The three in the headline are all repeating members of the preseason team as well as being the three seniors so I have no problem with the headline and take no offense. And seeing as it is not a position based team and no center and only one guard I have no issue with Dolson not being one of the five.
As for the 'value' of this - sort of like being ranked in the preseason poll - all nonsense until they actually play the games.

Dolson will have one of the best WNBA careers of any of the seniors. I would take her before any of them in the draft because she can do more offensively. Stef will be a force this season.

Headlines are notoriously written by dullards who can't write the actual stories.
