Doesn't Katie wear 33 for Mater Dei, which is the same number that De'Janae Boykin wears in HS. Napheesa Collier wears #24.

33 is available, but 24 is worn by Briana Pulido

Not sure if its usual, but it seems players like to wear the same number they wore in HS.

Yep

Pulido will probably give up #24 if Collier wants it. She gave up #11 this year to Nurse.

Samuelson and Boykin will have to fight it out for #33.

Does the number go to the player who commits 1st? If so it would go to Boykin right?

The number 1 recruit in the country should wear it if she wants it. I believe Katie wears 33 because of Larry Bird.

There are traditions within the history of the team that deal with players and wearing specific numbers. One tradition is contacting the player who last wore it for permission. It really doesn't matter what we think it is part of the UCONN way.

So presumably Natalie Butler asked Cassie Kerns about wearing #51 next year, only the second time the number has been worn, and if you want #53, #54 or #55, you need to ask no one. But it must be a little unnerving for any freshman to think about going back to ask Becca Lobo for #50 or Kara Wolters for #52. They'd probably just say you'll need to shake a lot of dust off the shirt, girl.

Truly a tradition? I thought it was a special thing when Tiff Hayes asked Diana about #3.

As long as it says UConn on the front of the jersey, I couldn't care if she wore #589.

I think the refs might care though unless they were 6-handed aliens. Just 35 numbers in play since I believe Geno will not allow #0, and even #1 appears to be untouchable, so 31 of probably 34 possibles have been used at least once.

I'm not sure it is every number that you need to get permission for - I think it is just the iconic ones - the ones on the wall already and probably a few others too.

So I just went through the UConn site archives. I may have missed it, but has anybody worn 10 since Sue Bird? Anybody at all?
That said, I do think the iconic numbers (namely 3 and 23) traditionally require asking permission. 31 (J. Moore, Charles, Dolson), 41 (McClaren, Stokes), and 51 are generally handed to post players, with may be a different tradition.

My understanding is, yes, a tradition. KML was reported to need to call Maya and others have similarly needed to do so. I am not sure it is 100%.

Of the lower number from the 30s and below, Sue's #10 is probably the last one worn by a legend that was not picked up again in the last 13 years, as Gabby put on Ashja's #15.

Moriah has made #4 her own as she is by far the top player of the three to wear it. #35 needs a taker since Marci Czel was the last to wear it in 2001, and Kathy Ferrier back in the early 90s was the only other occupant.

I wont' be able to find the video, but I do recall Geno not agreeing with this "asking permission" thing... not sure if the players/former players actually do this or not. I mean, just because he doesn't agree with it, doesn't mean they don't' do it.

Per media guide, no one has worn #10 since Sue.

Exactly, it exists but he didn't understand it. I think CD had something to do with it.
