They have been scrapping all year to see who could finish higher up in one of those UConn Freshman Stats Records lists. And far more than winning an NC or being a good teammate to a bunch of other Huskies, this is clearly why players come to UConn -- to pit themselves against the Sues and the Tinas and Mayas and Dianas for a high ranking on those schools lists. That way if Maya ever starts talking to you some years down the road about all those NPOYs she won, you can just freeze her silly by saying, "I'm three spots ahead of you on the Huskies' freshman assists list, so let's get real here."

Anyway, Kia has been building up her assists totals while Gabby has been buffing her rebounds numbers for high finishes on the freshmen lists. Kia should also finish in the top 10 in points and steals, while Gabby should also be in for steals, but it's the two specialties that have them eying very high places.

Gabby definitely is the underdog, because Kia has a very good chance to finish #1 in her category. With 99 assists in the book at a 3.3 apg rate, Kia is poised to hit 129 with a full 9 game remaining slate, and that would put her 6 ahead of current co-leaders Renee Montgomery and Pam Webber and 8 ahead of Jill Brumbaugh. Gabby is at 179 rebounds at a 6.3 rpg pace, which would put her at 236 for the year, 1 ahead of Sveta for 3rd but 60 behind Tina and 54 behind Maya.

But in any case, no matter what the result of this head-to-head class warfare, we are seeing some special achievements being nailed down.

Well, Tina and Maya are All-World players. Being behind only them on a list is a great accomplishment.

no matter how you slice it, they are finding a way to make the most of their minutes! Just outstanding! Mentally tough, gritty, UConn gals in less than a year!

Not fair, since Kia has played 753 minutes, versus 483 minutes for Gabby.

Is it? It's not exactly a coincidence that Nurse is getting more playing time.

Yeah, but for much of the time Gabby only has that big lug Kiah as main competition for rebounds instead of battling Stewie, Morgan, and KML. And you have to remember that UConn is still missing more than 46% of their shots, adding up to about 900 shots that Kia can't get an assist on.

Both Gabby and Kiah have very nice rebounds per minute rates 1 every 2.69 minutes for Williams and 1 very 2.66 minutes for Stokes. Those rates aren't as high as those of the nation's top rebounder Vicky McIntyre of Oral Roberts who is at 1 every 2.04 minutes, but they are ahead of another prodigious rebounder, Baylor's Nina Davis who is at 1 every 3.70 minutes.
