She's what...17? She also had two assists and two rebounds in her first exhibition. I think that it is a fairly good stat line. In addition, a stat line doesn't show how she performed on defense or other intangibles...

I don't think the comment about her shooting percentage is a dig at her, just an assessment. She went 2 - 7, so the statement about her shooting percentage is accurate.

She only played 19+ minutes and had 10 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 rebounds. I'll take it!

You're correct, it wasn't a dig. She'll probably be a great PG and be an All American by her Jr year when she'll be the starter. I doubt Geno recruited her for scoring abilities, but more so in how she plays the game and her leadership qualities.

= (Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks + Fouls Drawn) - (Missed Field Goals + Missed Free Throws + Turnovers + Shots Rejected + Fouls Committed).

I'm not fond of because it is dependant on playing time. A player with an of 50 could be thought to be better than a player with 25 when in actual fact she may have had twice as many minutes of playing time.

Changing the arithmetic function to geometric one:

= (Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks + Fouls Drawn) / (Missed Field Goals + Missed Free Throws + Turnovers + Shots Rejected + Fouls Committed).

gives you an immediate feel for relative performance and is not inflated by playing time.

less than 1 - put her in only with a 20 point lead and under a minute to go.
around 1 - eh, she's not hurting us.
approaching 2 - she's probably a starter, pretty decent.
2 or greater - she has to be on the floor at all times.

I'm just guessing at these numbers; don't know, but after a while the break-outs would become evident. And you could conclude a player with an of 2 is far better than one with 1.

Of course there are always going to be intangibles. For example, Kelly Faris always got the assignment of guarding the other team's best scorer. That would tend to lower anyone's , but hey, the coach knows, the team wins, what else matters?

The statement by the OP came off a bit negatively IMO and I felt the need to speak up. i don't know what she will probably be going forward, I know that she is in a great program at UConn, and I know that she had a decent stat line for that exhibition game.

Good points. You know, I've said it before - her game reminds me of Diana's. I'm not saying she's as good, but Dee won most of her NPOY awards without being anywhere near the top scorer in the NCAA.

Anyway, Dee always found ways to contribute whether assists, rebounds, steals, or hitting FT's if her shot was off. Seems like Kia has a similar game.

If you get fouled while shooting, it does not count in the box score as a missed shot. That 2 for 7 is straight up shooting, not involving any fouls at all.

If you make a shot and get fouled (and 1 situation), it DOES count on the box score.

Shooting FTs is not always a sign that someone was attacking the rim. It could mean that as the clock was running down that the opposition was fouling to stop the clock. I've seen many players get the majority of their FTs at the end of the game when being fouled intentionally. To assume that someone was attacking the rim because they shot 6 FTs could be an incorrect assumption.

She has a nice stroke, and I saw her put up a couple of 3s in yesterday's game.

Actually, the only thing I did not like about her game yesterday was her foul shot stroke. Her elbow was outside the ball, not under it, not a great shooting position. I call it the chicken wing syndrome ( no, it is not out at 90 degrees ). She then fired it quickly, reminded me of the movable flipper on a pinball machine. I am sure someone will point it out at some point or maybe not). I was not paying attention to her arm position when she was shooting 3's, so as far as I know, that could be fine.

I didn't see her shoot any free throws, I will watch. I cannot remember her shot from three, except to remember that it was smooth. I am sure that there are other more technically oriented folks who can answer that...
