Injury Keeps Katie Lou Samuelson's Hometown Fans From Seeing Her Play
At Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, she was the best high school player in the country. After starting for a national title team as a freshman at UConn, she returned to the school to have her No. 33 retired and she willingly mentored players during her visits over the past few years.
“There are young kids in the area who grew up watching Lou play or kids she talked to at camp, or signed an autograph,” Kiernan said. “When you’re a player like Lou is, you touch a lot of people. We don’t get a chance to see her play for UConn very much, other than on TV. So it’s too bad.”
"She wasn’t lying when she told us the reason she wanted to go to UConn,” Kiernan said. “She said, ‘If I go there, they’ll make me the best player I can possibly be.’ She didn’t go there just to get more awards. She went there to get better. That’s a unique approach and it takes work and you have to humble yourself a little. I expect her to get better and better every year.”
