We all know that we aren't scoring points, but how have the offense and defense ranked over the past 3 years?

Offense:
2023: Total offense: 314 ypg (#117), Passing offense: 186 ypg (#106), Rushing offense: 128 ypg (#98)
2022: Total offense: 303 ypg (#124), Passing offense: 112 ypg (#127), Rushing offense: 191 ypg (#33)
2021: Total offense: 264 ypg (#128), Passing offense: 164 ypg (#116), Rushing offense: 127.7 ypg (#108)

Defense:
2023: Total defense: 374 ypg (#85), Passing defense: 194 ypg (#42), Rushing defense: 180 ypg (#116)
2022: Total defense: 381 ypg (#70), Passing defense: 211 ypg (#43), Rushing defense: 170 ypg (#93)
2021: Total defense: 452 ypg (#115), Passing defense: 258 ypg (#105), Rushing defense: 194 ypg (#108)

Yardage differential:
2023: -60 yards
2022: -78 yards
2021: -188 yards

My takeaway. The team has gotten better under Mora, but there has been only minor improvement on offense under Charlton, but not nearly enough to be competitive. The defense has improved under Mora, especially on pass defense, although the bombs in yesterday's game makes us all feel differently. And, we need to figure out how to maintain good pass defense and stop running QBs.

A couple of other stats. UConn's offense has not gained as many yards as our opponents current average yards allowed by 65 yards per game. On defense, UConn's opponents are being held 28 yards below their current average yards gained per game. UConn is ranked #41 in plays greater than 20 yards allowed, but ranked #120 in plays greater than 20 yards.

Interesting. I won't use the lies, damn lies and statistics thingy.

I think the pass/rush yards from 2020 and 2022 are somewhat deceiving because so many games opponents were literally just running out the clock.

You are definitely showing a trend towards improvement. If I really wanted to dig down I'd go two levels deeper and look at those numbers for just the first half and then the first quarter.

Look at my post under the OL thread. According to PFF grades, the OL is performing similar to 2022. But, the way we run the ball has changed. Last year, 53.3% of our runs were up the middle or around the ends. This year, the number is 70.4%. That's either our RBs not reading the holes, the play design, or how defenses are playing.

One other stat stands out to me. Last year, UConn averaged 6.6 yards per QB scramble, this year we are averaging 1.7 yards.

Call me dumb but shouldn't runs up the middle plus those around the ends equal 100%? Other than up the middle or around the end where else do you run the ball?

Turner wasn't fast but Fagnano and Roverson are so slow.

Up the middle are the A gaps, between the Center and the Guards. They are not running through the B and C gaps like last year.

They need to because Walker is not getting any push down the middle

Walker, due to his size, has been much better when he pulls and needs to get a body on a defender in space. He can hold his ground but can't push anyone off the ball.

I'm still not convinced a change of Haynes to C and someone else sliding in to RG isn't going to happen.

Also, I'm cirious how the staff hasn't bulked up Walker more in the three years he's been here. Also a shame Fortin hasn't developed in to a starter. Guidone was such a find and blessing last season but C spot needs an upgrade next season.

We have only played three games. So far we have played teams with 3-man fronts, The formation should be more vulnerable to runs up the middle. Last year the fronts were more evenly deployed during the coarse of the year..
