The B1G official adds a second school (and third team) as a sport affiliate with Notre Dame joining in Men's Ice Hockey. (Johns Hopkins Men's Lacrosse and Women's Lacrosse were the first two sport affiliates).

UAB officially has an FBS team again after not having a football team the past two seasons, and joins the Conference USA West Division (formerly in the East Division before dropping the sport previously).

Kind of surprised ND is dropping down in class from Hockey East. Guess they didn't fit very well.

From what I understand was travel was the big issue for both ND and HE.

That's what I heard as well. But I don't see how this is worse than the travel for their ACC sports. And picking the "BUG" of all conferences. I found this bizarre, especially on ND's end.

"Bug" is only relevant within the fanbase. Many of the professors and administrators have a very good working relationship between themselves. Excepting the Dave Brandon as Michigan's AD experience, the Big10 schools and ND ave had a good working relationship for the better part of 25 years. Most of ND's hockey rivals are in the Big10, not Hockey East. ND's recruiting base is the Midwest (there are some pretty good hockey players in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota).

Hockey is such a regional sport dependent on it's intense rivalries. Minnesota has suffered without long time rival North Dakota. Michigan misses its rivalries with many of the old WCHA and CCHA schools such as Notre Dame, Miami of Ohio and the like. Notre Dame can get back to having meaningful conference games with Michigan and MSU.

I don't know if you have ever been to a college hockey game at a true hockey school. If you haven't, give it a try. They are awesome to be apart of.

ND joined HE because they had no home after the CCHA disbanded. At that time, HE was more attractive than the B1G to them until they realized they would be a middle of the pack team most years. Joining the B1G, they will still be middle of the pack behind MN, Wisc, etc. Smaller league than HE but I think with just as many competitive teams as HE. Maybe a better chance to win the tournament than in HE. The HE travel format was brutal for them.

Actually, the B1G was not an option to Notre Dame when B1G Hockey started. The B1G did not consider affiliate members at that time.

South Bend had some untimely bad weather for a few games. One of the HE teams got stranded in SB once and I'm sure several flights were delayed or cancelled into SB. Buses are much more flexible, but not when the rest of the conference is at least 12 hours away.

I think the bottom line is that chartering flights -- in this day when even football teams are having a hard time with the airlines -- was a money-loser for the school and the airline. Keeping the aircraft around for a 2 game set, coordinating with other teams or commercial flights, or flying the aircraft out and back in is expensive given the current high commercial demand.

Supporting documentation:

Around college hockey, team travel nightmares make for some good stories

Thanks to all who responded. I am still surprised by the move, but now have more perspective. Even the ND fans didn't seem to be too "BUG"ged by this. Maybe the ghost of Fielding Yost and the many other silly grudges from 70+ years are starting to fade away.

They backpedal well, don't they? Ironic that hockey is played in... Yost Fieldhouse.
