Joe Fagnano appreciation thread

yeah, sounds like its time to moneyball this to a degree. We're stuck looking at classical features and not modern ones.

Here's the thing. no amount of high school tape is going to show you how players make reads... ok, maybe I'm wrong but you're certainly not getting it off of highlight reels meant to show off a guy's arm or speed. What I'd do if we have enough staff and time is key in on the top 20 Division 2 QBs and take a good look and learn if they are able to make reads and then go fish on one of them.

We got the D2 QB from Western Florida under Randy. He really couldn't play at this level. I'd focus more FCS/MAC-conference USA. Maybe JUCO. Still hoping Welliver and McDonald make leaps this off season. I'd focus accuracy over all other traits honestly. The way Joe hit Hanson in perfect stride was beautiful. Also his long ball to Bell (dropped) and the TD to Gathings were dropped in the bucket.

Those guys would probably be all headed to high profile, upper echelon P5s at least all the 1st rounders. I haven't looked but thinking guys like Matt Degenaro and Shane Stafford were both better than most of our FBS qbs. Not NFL guys, but you don't need those types to win in college.

I wish it came in the preseason. It was clear early on, Evers accuracy was too much to overcome. Hope it gets better by next season.

Let’s hope Welliver is ready and we get another QB in the portal.

I didn't really think of it like that at the time. I just saw a kid whose highlights showed some nice accurate completions against BC, UMass and others.

My take is coming more from the standpoint, given what we have seen, I'd rather take my chances with a kid college film and productivity than a kid who got no time at multiple P5 places.

I fully get that our coaches may see it totally different and prefer the higher ceiling lower floor guy believing they can coach the kid up.

Well, that then is the problem. How can you tell if you can coach a kid to better mental talents?

Evers has an entire off-season to show he can be a quality thrower. If he can get himself to fagnanos level then he's a threat we haven't had in the independent era. If it's more of the same welliver is going to get a ton of message board noise.

Well my thinking is with all the extra coaches you can take deeper looks at players and do real analysis. Mora has modernize our program and while it is playing catchup, film analysis is a key part

It's literally the definition of coaching. There are very few kids that are ready made for CFB coming right out of HS. Especially at QB, and those kids aren't generally coming to UConn.

So it's my preference that they target developmental QBs out of HS and more accomplished guys out of the portal. That doesn't mean your HS developed guy cannot beat out the other guy in a fair competition.

As others have said, we are not going to get some dual threat superstar. They cost too much and if we had one we would have a heck of a time keeping him. You find a highly accurate, good vision, fast processing QB that can move reasonably well in a pocket and build your receiver corps. The NFL does it all day long because not every team has an RPO QB, nor do they last long save a few exceptions. The RPO is college fool’s gold where coaches think they must have an offense built around that concept because it gives them an advantage against the D. It only does if the dual threat is really duel capable.

Your saying the the 2 threats can't be turnovers and incompletions?

Juco, thinking of a healthy Tyler Lorenzon type would be great here.Fagnano is just a mature professional.(colleigtally speaking) He was a walk-on at Maine. Think folks may have overlooked that he is near 24 years old or will be at end of academic year.?
