Postgame Media Availability (at Maryland)
Coach Jim Mora speaks with the media following the loss to Maryland.
Winning and installing a culture in months for 100 people is going to be challenging when you have new faces everywhere. We also lost veteran leadership on defense.Mora is a good human that cares. Totally a class act. Unfortunately, he just doesn’t have the right stuff to fix this mess. We need somebody that is maniacally driven to win with beads of sweat, veins popping, willing to pack some mustard sandwiches and borrow a beater and drive to East Bumbfork to find the kid he needs to win.
Yeah, I agree that's a bit concerning. Seems like buyer's remorse for the some of the new additions to the roster. I do agree with what he says about not knowing portal players as well as ones recruited from high school, so it is a bit of a gamble but that's part of the new landscape in collegiate athletics. Hopefully this team will quickly gel together and develop a collective winning mindset.Maybe reading too much into it, but I don’t love that he spent so much time talking about body language, buying into the culture, etc. If that’s a concern after one game that’s a problem
He also spent the whole “press conference” competing with the marching band. Is this what a Big Ten setup looks like?I have to laugh at the "media" setup. The one microphone from a local TV station and two cell phones. One phone the guy takes after Mora's opening remarks. Mora has to just think sometimes about how low he's dropped on the media totem pole
Yesterday they were just way over matched. Maryland is just in a different stratosphere when it comes to talent and skill. It’s really that simpleTwo years in a row his team came out NOT ready. Maryland had 14 points before the fans sat down. They came out flat and slow.
Last year they couldn't tackle. But looked like they belonged.
Two years ago at Utah State they came out on fire until the season blew up with an injury.
Looking at the highlights I guess what I was most disappointed in was the missed tackles. Way too many. On the other hand, 50 points could have been 65 had we not held them to 3 FG's and given up TD's instead so maybe that's a dim bright spot. Two years in a row his team came out NOT ready. I meant 50 points could have been 62.Looking at the highlights I guess what I was most disappointed in was the missed tackles. Way too many. On the other hand, 50 points could have been 65 had we not held them to 3 FG's and given up TD's instead so maybe that's a dim bright spot.
UConn set this game up in 2019. I am always in favor of a FCS home opener to begin a season but I think the strategy was to be much better than they were at the time of signing this deal...plenty of season left.If you look at Mora's recored the past 2 years, he is 8-9 against G5/FCS with only the JMU game last year being a blow out loss. SIx of the losses have been by 14 points or less. That tells me we are competitive with G5 schools, but not ready to compete with P4 schools although Mora has had a couple of tight P4 games. So, I would say Mora has elevated the football program, but we are all hoping for even better.
Starting off the season against Maryland, or against any P4 school for the matter, was not the best strategy for a team with so many coaching and player changes. It's clear this team needed more practice to gel. Let's see how the next few weeks looks.
If Sammis had sat on it as he should have at the end of the first half it might, stress might, been a little more respectable.I meant 50 points could have been 62.
I agree to an extent.Maybe reading too much into it, but I don’t love that he spent so much time talking about body language, buying into the culture, etc. If that’s a concern after one game that’s a problem
you are so much more mature than me. I'm more of the nuclear-option, forehead-vein-popping, yell-at-the-tv-screen, type.If you look at Mora's recored the past 2 years, he is 8-9 against G5/FCS with only the JMU game last year being a blow out loss. Because of conference schedules it will be likely P4 games will always be in the first part of season.UConn set this game up in 2019.
