A few similarities to EDD...

Well, they both left, but there are no other similarities that I could see. Certainly in Geno's eyes, EDD appears to have been more honest than Samarie was, and Geno appears to have no respect for Samarie but does respect EDD.

When Elena left, she clearly lost her passion for basketball since she reportedly went five months without even touching a ball. Samarie got homesick on a Thursday and the following Monday she was enrolled at Kentucky. I'm sure it was a total surprise to Coach Mitchell to have such a talent drop into his lap.

They both behaved badly, in my opinion. It is simply a cowardly thing to leave in the middle of the night, without even discussing the move with your head coach, no matter what your heart tells you or what your family situation is, unless a family member is dying and you have to be at her bedside.

In Walker's case, she reportedly arrived on campus out of shape and with a poor attitude. I'm surprised that wasn't addressed immediately by the coaching staff.

This bit about "losing your passion for the game" is going to soon be known as the Delle Donne Defense in sports circles. It's a crock.

They both really hurt their perspective teams but EDD didn't hurt that team that was her freshman year, as they won the championship without her...but Walker hurt UConn quite a bit by leaving, making them more vulnerable to foul trouble among the bigger players in the final four

Wonks…you and others here have made your opine known, that EDD acted “cowardly”. I, of course, have taken the position that she was not even into her freshman year, and had every right, even a responsibility, to lead her life in her own way.

Is there any chance that you can put your judgment away, and move on? I feel the type of anger in your post makes this webpage small and petty.

You are misrepresenting Wonks. He is not saying she was cowardly (don't know if I would use that word, but it probably technically fits) for leading her life in her own way. But rather for how she did that. i.e. living in the middle of the night without letting her coach know. That's where I think people, who have a problem with EDD, have a problem with her.

As for Walker, she in all probability (based on the timing) set up her transfer with KY prior to letting the coaching staff know she was looking elsewhere and didn't want to be at UCONN anymore. I however, unlike others think it actually improved our team when she left. They seemed to gel together (band together) and improved.

Wonkster is absolutely CORRECT, both Walker and EDD are cowards in how they acted. There is no need to dial it down or be political about it, they acted like cowards who did not then and do not now have what it takes to play at UCONN and for a demanding HOF coach who takes no BS.

UCONN is clearly better off w/o quitters. We should celebrate the players on our team, the ones who have what it takes and follow through on their committments and work hard day in an day out. Kudos to our Lady Huskeies!

Some people can't seem to wrap their heads around the difference between criticism of a person and criticism of an act. IMNHO EDD's departure was cowardly. I don't think there is anything about her to indicate that she is a coward. Walker's departure was selfish not cowardly.

As for Ms Walker it appears that she has some difficulty with the truth. There were several reasons for her departure that floated around message boards for a while. None of them were homesickness. I agree with Meyers that her departure may actually have helped team chemistry. After she left there were several reports that her attitude was actually disruptive to the team.

All one has to do is listen to Auriemma to figure out the difference between Delle Donne's departure and Walker's.

Sam, you're not parsing my post correctly. I said they both behaved badly. I then went on to describe EDD's behavior
(i.e. departure) as cowardly. You didn't notice that I described Walker in a separate paragraph, after I finished with EDD.

And the poster who implied that you had to have a WWII scenario within a military court martial context to employ the word cowardly is simply wrong. There's a lot of cowardice in everyday life.

Walker has said she likes living closer to home so she can go home on weekends...what on earth is she talking about? What top ten basketball program allows you to go home on weekends? Even in the offseason...I sincerely doubt that. Obviously she had friends or a boyfriend at UK and wanted to be there, her parents wanted her to be at UConn and she did it out of obligation.

The thing that killed me about all of that was how many kids wish they had the talent to go to UConn, or they have the passion and heart but not the talent or physical gifts, and she went there because she felt she "had to". Man, wish I had had that problem in high school!
