These season-ending ACL injuries are always so heartbreaking. Especially when it happens to the star player of a team with tournament hopes. I'm reminded of last year's injury to Nneka Enemkpali in the game at Baylor in January. She'd been having an all-American-caliber season up until that point. Texas was never the same after that.

As for Oregon, I think they were already on the outer fringe of the bubble, with a #61 RPI and an atrocious nonconference schedule (#310, the worst of any team in the top 100). They play at Cal and at Stanford this weekend, and they're likely to be seeded to meet Stanford again in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 tournament. Unless they find a way to beat Cal and get at least one win over Stanford, I just can't see them getting in.

Michelle Smith tweeted:

One of best individual careers in Pac-12 history over: Oregon's Jillian Alleyne tore her ACL in practice Tues. Tough blow for surging Ducks.

Alleyne holds Pac-12 rebounding record as well as second in NCAA history with 92 double doubles. Was trying to push Ducks into NCAA field.

Oregon’s games at Cal and Stanford will be the first Alleyne has ever missed.

My heart aches for her. I was rooting for the Ducks to finish strong and have an outside chance at NCAA.
Prayers for a full recovery, and thanks for nearly 4 years of wonderful BB in the Pac12.

Injuries suck for everyone. Best of luck Jillian on a speedy recovery.

Huge blow for Oregon's chance to make the tournament. They are on the bubble due to their weak OOC schedule. Jillian also had the chance to be a Top 6 WNBA Draft pick. May now go later in the 1st round to a team that is willing to wait a year before she's able to play.

Tough break for Jillian and Oregon.

Terrible. So very, very sorry for this young lady. She is tremendous. I won't forget her fine performance against UConn. She was one of those really fine talents who played outside of the established caste of top teams. These ACL injuries are horrible.

Wish her all the best. So sorry to hear this.

Oh Bless her the poor sweetheart..... she is a good one too..... best prayers for a complete recovery in due time...... keep the chin up Jillian

Oh, no! There goes her WNBA season!

Get better and start the rehab process. It's tough, but several players have still been great after surgery. You can do it too!

Awful to hear. She'll still be a first round pick in the WNBA draft. After rehab, she'll be playing the following season.

Never stops being sad to hear about yet another talented player going down with knee ligament tears. Basketball and soccer are especially brutal for knees. Here's hoping that our understanding of the mechanics of the knee continues to improve, so that we can more reliably "train" the athletes' legs and brains to reduce the chances of it happening. As well as make for more reliable knee repairs when the ligaments do tear.

Went and saw her as a 8th grader with hopes she would join my team. Unfortunately she went to the juggernaut in our league at the time along with 4 other D1 recruits. Whenever we played them we had moral victories in mind . Anyhow, wishing her a speedy recovery and a bright future.

Unfortunately the joint developed to deal with a creature walking on all fours, and evolution never saw a need to correct it as we became erect, and it isn't a big enough part of the selection process to change now. So I am unsure there is much to do in the prevention process, but the repair procedures have evolved at breathtaking pace in the last 50 years and will continue to do so.

Agreed, though I was thinking more of the gender-related issues with the knee than the species-related ones. I've heard that there are potentially several reasons why ACL tears are more common in female athletes, though I don't think the scientific establishment is sure which ones are the most important. Among other things, girls have a more extreme angle at their knees from their wider hips. They also endure greater stress on the knee because of a lack of muscle engagement in the legs and elsewhere to absorb some of the force that would otherwise go into the joint tissue.

Can't do much about knee caving from hip ratios, but perhaps we can figure out a way to train young girls to jump and land properly, with proper engagement of the right muscles to mitigate impact stress on the joint.
