James Bouknight talks to HG Insider on his commitment to UConn

Q: What’s it like to be UConn’s first commitment in 2019? What was Coach Dan Hurley’s reaction when you told him you were committing?
A: “When I was talking to Coach Hurley, he said that E.C. Matthews was his first commitment when he was at Rhode Island. He was thrilled to have me be his first commitment and start to make this a big 2019 class. He wants UConn to get back to what it used to be.”

Q: What are some goals that you have laid out for yourself?

A: “I don’t really focus on individual goals. I just want to worry about winning every time we play."

It’s a beautiful thing to get a talented player who adopts that we’re underdog mentality to want to bring our program back to greatness. Hurley has that and now he’s looking for and getting players with that chip on their shoulder. Few people out there think we can come back to that level but that was also the case when Calhoun started.
