Jeff Jacobs: Cincinnati Game Immensely Important To UConn Football Program
This is the most important game of the 2017 season for the UConn football program.
As the UConn women reign and the men surprise on the West Coast, there is an irresistible temptation to turn the page and proclaim it basketball season. Truth is most UConn fans turned that page a few weeks ago.
This doesn't diminish the significance of the football finale Saturday at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati. Two 3-8 teams are playing out the string, and it's the most important game of the season? It may sound like poppycock, twaddle, bunkum and baloney, but then again Cincinnati is the place where folks pour their chili over spaghetti. So, all arguments are on the table. Follow along.
The first game of RE2 era would set the tone. The first game against a Power 5 school would be a measuring stick. The stretch of Missouri, USF and UCF would painfully show how far UConn must grow. The Fenway game against BC would show how the Huskies handle a New England "rival."
While that was all true, and they produced some wretched weekends, it also is true that Las Vegas set the season over-under win total at 3.5. It is true the Huskies were picked for last in the East Division in the AAC preseason media poll. Teetering between three and four wins, teetering between an East Division finish as high as tied for third or tied for last, the Huskies are where most everybody picked them entering the finale.
At the end of August, a 3-9 finish was going to appear disappointing. A 4-8 finish was going to be where we thought they'd be, and a 5-7 finish seemed possible.
UConn's offensive numbers turned out to be better than imagined and the defensive numbers worse than imagined, but the W-L record merely confirmed the current UConn talent level.
