What a mess.

Now the faculty is divided on the whether the president should stay or go. I say, close the school.

I posted this deep into another thread in another forum - but fits here.

Buyers remorse? Not publicly anyways but this has entertainment value:

Jim Delany can't be happy with the baggage Rutgers brings to the Big Ten
http://www.nj.com/rutgersbasketball/index.ssf/2013/04/jim_delany_cant_be_happy_with.html

>> "Jim Delany must feel like a new homeowner who, just five months after moving in, discovered the sinkhole in the backyard, the leak in the boiler and the rampant termite problem. This is who he invited into his posh neighborhood?

The Big Ten is no stranger to scandal, but this is the first time a school will drag its baggage through the front door. Delany issued a bland statement Friday about the raging dumpster fire Rutgers has become, promising it would “have no impact on Rutgers’ transition to, or membership in, the Big Ten Conference.”

Maybe all he ever cared about are those precious cable boxes – and hey, in that context, Rutgers sure did end up on a lot of TV sets this week. But even if that was the primary motivation, he has to be wondering what he got himself and his league into by invading New Jersey" <<

>> "This whole episode really makes you wonder if Rutgers has the savvy or the stomach for big-time athletics. This was a problem that could’ve been solved months ago with a checkbook, either by paying Eric Murdock to take his videotape and go away or to swallow the rest of Rice’s contract and cut ties with him."<<

Rutgers had been working for years to improve its reputation and financing, in large part by elevating its athletic program. The university had expanded and renovated its football stadium, at a cost of some $100 million, and had been negotiating to join the prestigious Big Ten Conference, a move that would raise its profile and bring in huge revenue from athletics.

From the New York Times article on Mike Rice. How does a university Negotiate to join the Big 10? Where did we fall down?

It's a two step process.

1. They have to want you.
2. You have to say yes sir, of course sir, whatever you want sir, whenever Delaney stops talking.

Nope, they set their eyes on the B10 and did everything possible to make themselves attractive including spending so much on athletics that academic programs had to be cut.

Don't kid yourself. Rutgers definitely lobbied the B10.

Jesus. RU got in because of their geographic location. Nothing else. And anyone who thinks Delaney and the B1G are embarrassed by this is naieve. The article hit it. Cable boxes. Millions of them. Whether they tune in to RU programming is irrelevant.

They are embarrassed... But also don't care.

Penn State and Rutgers have disproven the old adage that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

1000+. They put it in their sights and got it done. Quite sure they are subsidizing their entry and that is what was/is negotiated.

Just watching those girls tonight and seeing UCONN being flashed at every juncture from coast to coast and winning is all we need to do. Out teams conduct themselves with class and dignity. If anyone noticed our bench towards the end of the game Geno had them sitting and cheering unlike the last 3 games against ND where their girls were gloating. Our athletic department is one of the tops in the country as is evidenced by our never mentioned soccer teams, field hockey, baseball, track and field and soon one of the top ice hockey teams. I am convinced the powers to be will come around full circle and be begging us to be a part of one of their conferences just to bring some civility to the CR madness. Proud Husky to the end.

While some of our passive fans cry and pull hair out over every tweet.

If we were smart, we'd realize we're sitting on a gold mine. And start marketing it. I have the impression Herbst sees the same.

The main factor in their admission was the NYC market. B1G wants a piece of that market. Other than that, Rutgers would not be in the B1G. I would guess that you're assuming we haven't been in contact with the B1G or ACC. Do you know that?

Last night's game was up against some tough competition for viewership. Game of Thrones on HBO has MASSIVE viewership in its 3rd season, the Academy of Country Music extravaganza on CBS draws huge ratings in the Bible Belt & elsewhere & Vikings on History Channel has developed a cult following among the college aged crowd & beyond. I'd like to see the Neilsen ratings on what the Women's game actually drew.

I have always had a low opinion of Rutgers. But on the football side i think they will be fine. Not Ohio State fine but I've been of the opinion for a long time that big East football is badly under-rated. Rutgers will come in as a middle of the pack Big 10 team, maybe even upper middle. their basketball program on the other hand will show itself to have been over-rated as a result of its association with the Big East.

Scary as that sounds, yes. As are a few other Big East programs. I dout Rutgers would win the Colonial. Yet looking at RPI they were 109. Delaware had thew highest in that league at 145 or so. But it all came from Strength of schedule. Rutgers was 54 as a result of playing in the Big East. Of course being in the Big 10 they will get a similar boost. The reality is they stink.

Yeah they stink. And everyone knows they stink. Hence I don't think it's possible for them to be overrated. A bloated RPI is not necessarily the same as being overrated. But we're getting into semantics.

We agree. Rutgers stinks.

Lets get one thing straight: Rutgers always has and always will be an embarrassment. That was true before the incident, and is just as true after.

And what has been said before in this thread regarding 9 million NJ TV's is absolutely right.

I'm still of the opinion, and more so after this, that B1G network will have a rough go of it trying to get into NYC. I'm hoping beyond all hope that they'll need us, and especially what we bring with hoops in the city, to get that deal done. We'll see

They'll be good, a mid tier program, but they'll never be Ohio St, Nebraska, Mich or Wisc. This is a great move for rutgers, and the strange irony is that perneti helped get them there and then they dumped him.

But they had to act like a Bigtime Program ... particularly the Football.

It tis about cable boxes. But, Schiano ... as much of a flimflam sham he was ... gave them the perception of having their act together. They still are RU ... the dumpster fire of bad bad choices and poor execution.

In the end Schiano was worth every helicopter ride and perk they gave him. I mean it still remains to be seen if they'll actually use their increased income in an intelligent manor. My money is on no.

They're like the guy that goes out and spends $20,000 on Powerball tickets... and in their case they actually won. They'll probably spend it all on BS and be in the exact same financial bind they're in now.

The Star-Ledger reported today that Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany is expected to have a role in the search for a new AD as Rutgers prepares for a move to that conference in 2014.

I wonder if he'll have a say in picking a replacement president as well?
