I'm getting hints of being excited about the season. Just little flashes of quiet confidence. I think TJ Wiest is going to make a huge difference this year. We've accused HCPP of being passive on game day and letting GDL have too free a hand. Isn't it likely that he'll to the same with Wiest? Count me among those who think that we are going to see a big upgrade on offense that will more than offset a mild regression on defense. In spite of myself, I'm starting to get excited about it.

I agree. I see positive signs everywhere I look. The only issue is that our schedule is very challenging this year. We can't lose the close games or with a better team we may end up with a record that doesn't reflect it.

Definitely. People overlook how last year we were a few plays away from a 9 win team. I believe a more confident Whitmer with a more dynamic playbook wins those games.

My thoughts: Whitmer should be better with a year under his belt, plus our o line should be improved. There is only one direction to go from last year's line woes. We'll probably be starting four seniors and a junior on the line. I think our young pups have more potential but I'm not sure they will usurp the upper classmen. A better line also means a better running game. McCombs is good, but I'd love to see Joe Williams. Maybe its just curiosity, but I've heard so much about his speed. The receiving corps, including slot receivers, should be better than ever. Although that isn't saying much. We'll miss Griff though.

I was 9 years old, getting a hair cut, when the Mets shocked the world and won the World Series.

As a famous Husky once said, with a slight change to the words, "We're gonna shock the world" in 2013.

Most 5 wins teams are. They were also a handful of plays away from being a 2 win team, like most 5 win teams.

Crush Towson.

Hang 40 on maryland. 200 yards rushing, 250 passing

Imagine the excitement at the rent two weeks later for michigan, who might be top 10?

UConn is long overdue for a start to finish energetic, successful season.

Sorry buddy I live in the real world. They could have won more games, they could have won fewer games. What they were was a 5 win team and the schedule is tougher and they lost a lot of good players.

They could have a better season but at least come up with actual reasons - not some fantasy that they were a 9 win team disguising as a 5 win team last year.

I put last season's record squarely on the coaching. With that defense all we needed was a decent running game to get Whitmer settled in those games and he had terrific TEs to boot. Instead, we had a mad scientist for an OC running the wildcat and using a 165 RB back as a workhorse between the tackles. 90% of the coaches in the country win 8 games with that team and against that schedule. P has no one to blame but himself for being on the hot seat this season.

I don't know about 90%, of coaches winning 8 games, but P has no one to blame but himself for bringing Deleone here, that I agree with.

Of all the 13-0 UConn teams that I've seen in the past, this one has a particularly good 13-0 feel to it! ;) Seriously, though, I'm feeling very very optimistic about this year. Very optimistic...

Weist (pronounced WEEST), help lead the Bearcats to a 10-3 record in 2012 and a 48-34 victory over Duke in the Belk Bowl. Weist served as Cincinnati's offensive coordinator in the Belk Bowl as the Bearcats gained 554 yards of total offense on 53 plays and did not have a turnover. Cincinnati was 17 of 25 in passing for 332 yards.

As offensive coordinator in 2006, WKU ranked 23rd in the country in total offense, also finishing 17th in pass efficiency rating while posting more than 4,000 total yards for the fifth consecutive season. Weist helped direct an offense that averaged 405.73 yards per game in 2005, while scoring more than 30 points a game. The Hilltoppers ranked in the top 30 nationally in four different categories.

If you want to see TJ Weist calling plays, the entire Cincy vs Duke Belk Bowl is on youtube. Enjoy.

Weist opens up the game with 4 wide outs and no running back.

Not that I'd hold it against Weist, but Duke gave up 50 to Stanford, 27 to
Wake, 41 to VPI, 48 to FSU, 56 to Clemson, 42 to GT and a mind blowing 52 to Miami.

They gave up 198 pts in the four games prior to the bowl. 269 points in the last 6, with 5 losses.

Not hanging a huge number would be an embarrassment. Their defense was worse than UConn's offense.

All of the positive energy hinges on blocking. When that happens we can start to think about breakout backs and prolific offense. We should have a solid improved QB this year but he can't operate without better protection. Maybe the big uglies are the guys that should be getting tbe encouraging tweets

Like many others, I was super positive last year. 8-4 seemed to be our bottom going in to the season. Then reality hit. Save your "My Little Pony" act for the BB board, 'show.

You do realize that the 2012 record does not carry over into 2013. Right now we are tied for first place and have no losses.

The offense that Weist ran in the Belk bowl reminds me a lot of the Holgerson WVU offense. Mostly three and four wide outs, a lot of shotgun, screen passes, misdirection running plays, very aggressive play calling and yes, passing on first down. Whitmer may be asked to do some running this year.

I'm pretty sure he's not allowed to that. If they need the QB to run they'll bring in McCummings. I mean no one is going to expect him to run.

Great moments in UConn football that never happened:
Opposing team defensive coordinator 2012: "Whose that at QB? McCummings? The kid who always runs? Better play him to pass boys, DeLeone is an offensive genius. He's been setting us up for just this moment."

Didn't that actually happen last season at a goal line scenario at Rutgers and McCummings threw it away? Like 4th and 1 from the 1 yard line? Like...of all the times to use it. Smh.

No disrespect to McCummings, because he's actually a decent runner, I would rather never see the 'Wild Dog' offense ever again at UConn.

Edit: Found the play.

3rd and Goal at RUTG 2 Scott McCummings pass incomplete to Martin Hyppolite. Then we kicked a FG. Still think it was a dumb call.

I think Hyppolite was even out of bounds,

The only other decent throw I can remember was to McCoombs - who was wide open and dropped it.

We didn't have the right tools to run it - doesn't mean it can't be effective under TJW with different playmakers.
