Is Solo still in a slump?

Regardless of slump, Solo maybe the one guy i’d want playing all 40. Potential for game changing instant offense, attention he draws, and a Westbrook-lite athleticism and intensity.
Even with him shooting in the mid 20's from 3 currently, teams still have to chase him around and guard him like he'll drain a 3 if he's given a little room. I doubt teams will start to sag off Solo because of his early struggles. He's not Steph Curry, but he is definitely 1 of the few players that can swing a game in just a few possessions.

If you didn't listen to Hurley's pregame media availability audio this is a good read about Ray Allen trying to help Ball.

“Solo the early (rough) start to the year (he had a chance to talk with) the greatest shooter or maybe the greatest player in UConn history and a two-time NBA champion and one of the greatest shooters in the history of the game,” UConn coach Dan Hurley said. “It was like, ‘Ray, what was your mindset when you were going through a tough stretch?’

@Waquoit, asking again, who is that you are talking about? Just curious.
Sorry, I missed the question. My guy, Christian Vital.

We all dog on Donny as an announcer/commentator, but he did say something last night that I had been thinking myself, that the new energy and focus Ball has been putting on his D and other aspects of his game has probably affected his 3 pt shooting. I agree with him that as Ball continues to round out his game that the 3 pt shooting will steadily return.

He's got a shot that is picture perfect, so hard to think it won't. Looked great yesterday.

I thought he was in a slump from downtown but not the mid-range. Looks like hes fully out. The kid is back.

Do any metrics people have Solo’s percentage from say 8-15 feet this season? I swear it’s gotta be like 75+

Edit: maybe that’s an exaggeration, but you get my point. I love that look any time it’s open.

I saw a lot of people in the chat the other night trashing Solo, even though he has been very consistent of late.

Really? About what? No wonder why I haven't been in the chat in years. The only time all game I yelled at him was when he and Ross had the fast break and Ball could have passed to Ross for an easy layup but took it to the basket with a guy on him and got fouled. But that was minor and the rest of the game he was really good.

Kid is our alpha go to guy. Everyone needs one of those for reasons other than scoring.

Solo worked on the other parts of his game this year and he did a pretty good job. He gets to the rim consistently, his elbow jumper is money and his production has been steady though the transition. His defense is better this year as well.

As Hurley said, he expects the three point shooting will move toward his career numbers. No question in the last few games it seems to be coming around. He is a huge piece for us and seems to be a great kid. Hope it continues.

Again it was Butler. Providence offense seemed top tier against them so no surprise if Ball and others like Ross had a good game…Butler just does not play great defense.

Have to wait on this slump until we play better teams in the conference as Butler might be 6th or 7th in the end.

It contradicts what Ball has said himself. By focusing on other aspects of his game, he feels less pressure on his shooting and his muscle memory is more prone to kick in.

Sounds good in theory, but results so far haven't borne that out. I do fully expect that will come around though.

Asked the same basic question a game or two ago and somebody had the %'s. At that time it was 50%(which I found unbelievable, really can't remember him missing many, like you) It has gone up in the past couple of games, I'm sure.

It seems he's been doing a little bit of everything but his shot has been off. Last night he did a little bit of everything and shot it really well

The "solo is in a shooting slump" narrative is total nonsense.

I watched some tape, and last year as a first time starter, Solo made his bread on catch and shoot shots that were high quality - open looks, feet set, on balance.

This year especially early on he had a greeeeeeeen light to expand that shot selection, and he's taken many more movement shots, shots with his feet not square, shoulders coming square while he's elevating. In short, his shooting hasn't suffered some mysterious collapse, he is trying to expand his universe of what can be considered a "good shot". He's trying to grow and establish his new shooting envelope.

Now that he wasn't hitting at a high enough clip, I think you will see(and have seen) him adjust back just a touch and focus on higher quality shots, and those shooting rates will jump.

He's getting a lot more attention from the opponent's best D guard(s) and come a time when pick your poison, double Solo or Mullins arrives, both are going to get and hit a lot of open shots ... aka let Braylon play 30 mins with Solo as well. Keep them on the floor together more often than not. Mullins' D is just fine and only getting better.

Might take from Stew's minutes a bit.....
