Is 2nd the new 1st down?

One source of frustration before we pulled it out was our 2nd down play. Didn't it seem (especially in the 1st half) we lost yards on every 2nd down? It got to the point that an incomplete pass was a positive result.

I was really surprised with how stubborn the offense was in going with LM.
why is there such a concern in going with MD?
