I decided to put this here since the debate of whether or not UCONN should expand Rentschler Field comes up quite a bit on the CR board. The closing of one of the end zones is something UCONN can easily do if/when it's time. They are expanding to over 61K for $60M. Current capacity is 55K.

Here's the article with pics:

"Those project specifics will be presented to the Board of Regents at a later date. The stadium renovation plus the parking and green space enhancements are all part of a $60 million upgrade to the primary campus entrance and football facility."

They must be expecting corn crop value to bounce back this year.

It might entail improvements other than expansion.

Their current footings may also not support 6,000 more seats and the associated patrons. That means new infrastructure. When the Red Sox decided to put seat above the Green Monster, did you think they were just going to climb up the ladder and sit in the netting?

They have three very big dollar items mixed in:

- A very large and fancy video board. (Texas Tech spent 16 million on one recently)
- A two-level 40,000 square foot club seating area that should help monetize the area beyond what 6k seats would assume.
- ISU's capacity and crowds have used hillside seating between each grandstand and end zone stand section. Literally they have lots of people sit on a hill in each corner of the stadium. So ISU is replacing half of the hillside seating (est. 4k) as well as removing the existing south stands (around 3k) and building 13,300 seats in place of the 7k they "lost". Needless to say they'll be able to charge more for the new seats than they did for hillside general admission.
