What’s going on with Texas? Only 34 total points here in the fourth quarter. They are definitely losing this game.

Joyner Holmes is still making the SAME MISTAKES she made as a freshman-she gets a rebound, decides to dribble the ball all the way up the court and go 1 on 3 and loses the ball. Seriously? She's got to be one of the biggest disappointments of all the girls rated #1. I actually think Mercedes turned out better than Joyner is and that's saying something.

Just a truly dreadful performance by Texas.

And just a reminder: This is a team led by 4 seniors, 3 of whom were top 7 in their class.

Maybe I'm projecting, but from Aston's body language on the bench I can't avoid the feeling that she knows she's toast.

To be fair, Holmes was #2 behind Cox :D

Mercedes Russell actually had a fairly decent senior year, 1st team all-SEC.

69-51 ISU final

Joens 23 pts, 9 reb, 2 ast

Collier 17 pts, 11 reb, 1 stl, 1 blk

My Horns took it on the snout in front of the home folks.

Holmes 3-13 / 9 boards / 6 points.

So, let's review Karen Aston's resume the last 5 years:
2015-16 31-5, 15-3 2nd
2016-17 25-9, 15-3, 2nd
2017-18 28-7, 15-3, 2nd
2018-19 23-10, 12-6, 3rd
2019-20 15-8, projected 19-11, 11-7 3rd (before Big12 Tourn)
Here recruiting has now taken a huge dip.
2017 (next years seniors) Boothe, Patterson, Littleton all transferred
2018 #2 Charli Collier, however #8 Sedona Prince transferred.
2019 #40 Celeste Taylor
2020 #52 Ashley Chevalier and #97 Shay Holle

That's a far cry from her top 10 classes. I think the "Karen watch" is back on...

It takes a special level of offensive ineptitude to only score 51 points despite forcing 26 turnovers and having 19 offensive rebounds. Usually when Iowa State shoots 28% on threes they lose, not win by 18.

Back on? When was it taken off?
Well, since the loss to Hawaii, they did beat Tennessee and Stanford with understandable losses to TCU (close game and TCU is decent), to Baylor and at WVU when they were playing well (as opposed to the train wreck that WVU has since become). Their offense almost looked proficient. Collier and Holmes were meshing so I, foolishly, thought they turned the corner. But alas, I was sorely mistaken. Karen's record is still significantly better than Gail G's record and she's consistently been 2nd or 3rd in the conference whereas Gail was never better than 4th so by comparison, Karen is a much improved leader of this program. That said her actual coaching of offense and development of players is highly suspect...:)

Joyner Holmes and Charli Collier are shooting a combined 38.7% in conference play. I don't understand how two players who are bigger and stronger than almost all their opponents can be so bad at scoring.

I understand how- LACK OF COACHING. Charli has a grand total of 3 assists in 11 Conference games and 11 assists in total on the year. The team has 314 assists against 367 Turnovers-yikes!

I think you’re pulling down Collier by combining their stats.

Collier is shooting 40.8% in conference. That's pretty bad for a 6'5" post. She is actually shooting better on three-pointers than two-pointers. Fortunately as a sophomore there is still time to turn it around, but I think that will require a new coach or a transfer to find a coach that knows how to utilize her skills.

Holmes was rated #1 by Blue Star, #2 by HoopGurlz and #1 by Prospects Nation OVERALL, regardless of position...
Ok, thanks. For some reason I was under the impression that Lauren Cox was the consensus #1 player for her class. No idea where I got that from.
