Iowa getting thumped by 16 nearing the end of the first half.

I had a feeling people were overlooking MSU.

Come on Shades, you know Iowa is a "backstretch team", they are not comfortable unless down by 10 in the 4th! ;)

Ok, here come the Hawkeyes, end of 3rd Qtr, MSU 63-Iowa 55, that's 27 points in the 3rd quarter for Iowa, compared to just 28 in the first half...

Michigan State is not at all a bad team. I didn't see this game, but I saw much of their previous game against Minnesota and they looked quite good. Nia Clouden and Alyza Winston are having outstanding seasons so far, and those two combined for 46 points in this game.

Iowa needs to learn how to defend. Usually teams' defense is ahead of their offense early in the season, but with Iowa it's the complete opposite right now.

Memo to Lisa Bluder -the first half counts as much as the second half so you might want your team better prepared for the first 20 minutes vs. just the last 20 minutes...

Coach Merchant got Michigan State playing well again. Stumbled last year and now they are back. Iowa is well coached and fundamentally sound squad. Great win by Michigan State...4-0!!

86-82 MSU final

Caitin Clark Kent couldn’t quite save the day for her Iowa team, but she did end up with...
35 pts (11-25, 4-10 3P, 9-9 FT), 7 reb, 4 ast, 4 TO, 2 blk, 1 stl in 36 min
Is Clark the same kind of player that Chennedy Carter was or is she better and is she a better team player? She takes a lot of shots.

This isn't exactly an answer, but Carter averaged a career high 4.9 apg as a freshman, then was below 4 apg as a soph and Jr. She averaged 4.1 for her career. Clark is at 7 apg thus far.

Wow! After 5 games Clark is averaging 30 points per. I'm not sure anyone has gotten off to such a fast scoring start. Too bad for a Covid shortened year (a condensed schedule) as she may be close to breaking the Freshman record by the time all is said and done this year (Tina Hutchinson, San Diego St. averaged 29.9 in 30 games as a freshman for a 898 total points, Kelsey Mitchell is 2nd on the list with 873 points in 35 games for the #2 all time scorer at Ohio State)
If Caitlin can stay healthy she may threaten Kelsey's overall scoring record, even with this season's missed games.

I caught a little bit of the game and it sent me into something of a deja vu watching Clark at Dowling Catholic HS. During her younger years, she had one or two other players that could help with the scoring. Her senior year, she was the epicenter: scoring, assisting, stealing, rebounding. To the point that she'd be exhausted by game's end.

In this game, only one other player scored in double figures and took more than 10 shots: Monica Czinano, the latest in the line of Bluder centers who score. That wasn't quite enough to come back all the way against the Spartans, who had three scorers in double figures.

Just wondering if the cumulative effect to having to do it all -- or thinkng she has to -- might catch up to a freshman as the season goes on. The good news for Iowas: what a legit 5-star recruit can do for a team. The next news: you need some other players of/near her ability to push it forward.

p.s. Of course, I ponder the concept of what the Irish fab frosh - Maddy Westbeld -- could've done with Caitlin Clark at ND, but it isn't to be (sigh....). However, I'll enjoy Maddy's season (and that of the other Iriish) and keep an eye for when five-star Olivia Miles will arrive on campus with her Sundance kid, Sonia Citron.

Great factoid! Not every day we hear the name Tina Hutchinson dropped on this forum. What ever became of her?

I wonder what the freshman assist record is.

Tina Freil at Pacific averaged 11.1 assists per game for a total of 321 in 29 games is the Freshman record. Suzie McConnell, The all time assist leader at Penn St. also had 321 in 33 games as a Freshman. I thinks it's safe to think that those records will be safe in this case.

I, as you know, cry not for Notre Dame, but I do empathize with that "what could've been" wistfulness on the un-landed recruit.

Try as some have to diminish UConn's success with the trope of "Geno gets all the players," he's had plenty of the painful swings-and-misses: Tamika Catchings, Nicky Anosike and, of recent fame, Aaliyah Boston are just three that come to mind right away.

As for Iowa, Czinano is a returning all-Big Ten first teamer and is playing like it. While they could use some more consistently threatening offensive weapons to balance things out a bit for Czinano and Clark, I'd say 95% of Iowa's problems are on the defensive end right now. Over their first 5 games, their opponents are averaging over 84 ppg. Just imagine where they'd be right now if Clark wasn't going berserk on the scoring with 30+ games on the reg.

Absolutely agree. Got to get some help on either end of the floor, otherwise Caitlin is going to fry out sooner rather than later. (Believe me, I wish she was in South Bend, where she could have H-O-R-S-E games with Sam Brunelle ;) ).

Yes, the last-second Boston decision even took this Irish fan by surprise. Guess one just reloads and moves on. In the Irish case, Olivia Miles & Sonia Citron are a fine bounce-back.

Plebe, Here is a good article on Tina, I am not sure what really became of her after her injuries. As far as what if recruits, how fun would it have been if Tina had followed through on going to UCLA to join former East St Louis star and greatest female athlete ever Jackie Joyner at UCLA (she ended up following her High School coach to San Diego State). Imagine those matchups with USC and Cheryl Miller and the Mcgee's. And One: Tina Hutchinson, unrealized freshman phenom

East St. Louis is just across the river from St. Louis. I remember when the Tina and Jackie were dominating the St. Louis basketball prep scene. I wondered what happened to Tina.
