In addition to the obvious (base etc.), McGuff has some performance based incentives.

If the team achieves a 3.5 GPA, he gets 150K. That would give him the same bonus as winning:
  • The Big Ten Regular season
  • The Big Ten Tournament
  • Making the Final Four
  • Being named the NCAA COY

Admittedly, a 3.5 is a lofty goal, but then, so are the other goals for OSU. It is interesting to see the relative value.

do you think this would be an incentive to put the team in cupcake majors ?

One always has to be concerned about unintended consequences.

Not just cupcake majors, but pressure on profs. Can you image if some assistant says that if Suzy gets B instead of a C, it is worth 50K. Might be tough to avoid having a chat with the prof.

You have to imagine that McGuff's base salary and being a good person that he would be more focused on bettering these young women in academics and athletics alike not just the money. But I guess you can never tell and just hope for the best.

I don't think that is unheard of. It actually shows the school cares about academics - at least in the particular sport.

It, also, sends a message about goals to recruits and their families.

Indeed..I imagine they're not as concerned with the academic success of their football team.

Still, I think this is cool.

They have the same incentive... but it's a D average for football.
