For Elena Delle Donne, basketball was easy, but fame was hard
That point arrived during her senior year of high school, when she was the top women’s basketball recruit in the country. She had committed to U-Conn., but before signing her letter of intent, she summoned the courage to tell her parents she was finished with basketball.
Delle Donne said she arrived in Storrs, Connecticut, in the spring of 2008 amid a fog of depression, having not spoken a word on the drive from Delaware. She said during the following day’s pickup game with some U-Conn. greats — Maya Moore and Tina Charles — that she felt as though she was running through mud.
Caroline Doty, watching from the sideline with an injury, said, “Elena went on the baseline and just plopped down on the ground, and she just looked depleted … like she was dead, and just not interested.”
(note that the author wrote "U-Conn" and not "UConn" and I've kept the actual text)
