Injury Impact

Injuries we all hate them but unfortunately is part of sports. Some have already been hit, this is just a thought on the impact it would play on the current top ranked teams as to how much they are putting their hopes on a single player.
1 Baylor - Griner, would not be a top 20 team.
2 Connecticut - KML, would still be #2
3 Duke - E. Williams, still to 15 maybe 10
4 Stanford - Owgumike, top 20 at best
5 Maryland - A. Thomas along with loss of Mosely top 15-18
6 Notre Dame - Diggins, not in top 25
7 Kentucky - Walker, still top 10
8 Penn State - Lucas, top 15 team
9 Louisville - Schimmel, top 20
10 Delaware - EDD, not top 40

I disagree on some.

I'd put Baylor at 5-10. Sims is great; others are very good.

UConn may be 3-5. KML makes everyone else better because she draws the defense.

Duke 6-8.

Stanford 10 or so.

Maryland 15 sounds close.

Notre Dame about 15-18.

Kentucky and PSU sound about right. Kentucky would miss Mathies more.

Louisville might be in the top 25.

Delaware would be 40-60. The other kids are decent and experienced, but EDD is the most valuable player to her team in the nation, given the talent disparity.

Yea Baylor would still have 4 starters from a 40-0 season. 3 of which are seniors (Hayden, Madden, and Williams) and an AA Jr in Sims. Would still have McD AA's Pope (as Sr) and Johnson and Prince (Fr). Still a very formidable team. I could see them in the top 5 still. UCONN and Duke ahead of them but after that......Stanford, Maryland, Kentucky, ND?? I think they could still play with them.

I think Stanford and ND would suffer the most with the loss of their big gun.

I agree with Milford on Kentucky, I would say that Adia Mathies would be a far greater loss for UK. I think Penn State losing Bentley would be equally devastating.

IMO, UConn could absorb the loss of KML better than the loss of Stewart. Jefferson could play the point and Hartley could move to the wing but there's no replacement for a 7-foot wingspan than can rebound, score on the block and shoot the three, not to mention swat away shots. KML is very important but Stewart will be the real difference maker.

I agree with Milford on Kentucky, I would say that Adia Mathies would be a far greater loss for UK. I think Penn State losing Bentley would be equally devastating.

Not as much as before Dara Taylor joined the team.

Although the injury context is bad mojo, I still think there's an interesting discussion to be had here, namely who are the best players on the top teams, and how critical are those players to their respective teams' success?

And yes, I'd agree Uconn has the most depth and balance such that Uconn is a final four team with any 10 of its kids. No one else can say that.

The obvious choices would be the moderators, who I think are outstanding (there I go brown nosing again), but let's eliminate them from consideration. The next obvious choice would be pap, the Supreme Linkster, but I'd like to go with an unheralded choice just to give her some credit.

I find UConnCat adds a lot on here in terms of insights and information.

Agreed that this thread is something of a buzz kill, BUT...

I'm not sure if I'd list KML as the worst piece to lose. She's a major source of offensive production, and good all around, but I don't get the impression that she's a lynchpin of the team - yet. For now I look at her more as an icing-on-the-cake player. You love it when she's at 100%, but if she were missing, other players can do most (obviously not all) of her job.

Similarly, for all that Stewart can do, I think she isn't the worst piece to lose either, because she's still a freshman in the preseason. Most of the team is used to playing actual games without her in previous years, and the team would still gain appreciably from the other freshmen.

So I think the most important players are, in this order:

1. Hartley (you can't teach experience in practice, et al)
2. Dolson (ditto)
3t. KML
Stewart

Doh! Luckily (for me) I don't believe I have the power to influence the future. I smile inwardly when driving in rush hour and I state for all to hear, "Wow, 3/4 of the way there and no traffic at all!" The cringing and apoplexy exhibited by the passengers is quite enjoyable. I do however no longer say, "I hope this plane doesn't crash" while buckling up. I've been told that crosses the line.
