For anyone interested in info about them.....[details from videoconference (and after) with Coach Mulkey, both players, and team trainer]

Incident occurred as follows: Ursin scored on breakaway [in practice]. Opposing team was inbounding and threw medium length pass. Ursin was running full speed in one direction to intercept pass, Richards was running full speed in the opposite direction to intercept pass. They both saw the other a split second before impact but could not avoid collision. Ursin’s head hit Richard’s right hip at full speed. Both players were knocked unconscious but both regained consciousness quickly. Both were lucid and able to answer all questions. Richards could not feel her lower extremities. Ursin had no other injuries, taken to hospital by car for checkup. Richards was placed in neck brace and taken by ambulance to hospital. In ambulance her loss of feeling was only below knees. Ursin was diagnosed by doctor with concussion but no other physical harm. Richards was treated by four doctors in Waco and a Neurological Specialist in Dallas. Scans show no signs of spinal cord damage.

Ursin: in Stage 3 [of 5] of uniform NCAA Concussion Protocol [used across all sports]. When she has no further symptoms [headaches, etc.] she will be moved to Stage 4. She says she feels fine.

Richards: indefinite leave. With team at practice, doing rehabilitation, but won’t play until full recovery. Fully lucid, no sign of mental damage. Does require assistance walking [balance issue]. Her rehab includes walking at 50% G on treadmill. She was happy and smiling. Her rehabilitation will follow her physical limitations. If she can do it, she is allowed to do it [monitored]. She thinks that she will play this season. Honestly, if she is playing by January that would be a super recovery.

Mulkey said she has never witnessed an injury of this type, has no point of comparison. Closest comparisons were M. Jones’ temporary loss of sight [broken orbital bone] and another player with blood clot in heart. Said she is a Mom first. Will do what is best long term for her player. Basketball not part of that decision. After recovery, then basketball becomes part of decision making process. Not handled like a knee injury, broken bone, etc. Doctors will make every decision....and only doctors.

Team will adjust. Now down 4 starters from last year. Players will be forced to “step up”. Interested to see who will become on court leaders. Richards and Ursin still leading from sidelines.

Couple of promising reports that Richards is optimistic about playing this season but isn't rushing it. Hoping Moon is fully recovered in the next several weeks.

I was coaching soccer and on the last play of the last game of season I had just replaced my normal goalie and put him on the field as sweeper. He steals the ball and goes the length of the field, with everyone cheering, and head for the goal. The opposing goalies comes out aggressive right at the edge of the box and dives for the ball just as my guy kicks. The ball, my players leg and the goalies neck all collide. The ball goes in but the goalie just lies there. He has some numbness in his feet so we called for an ambulance. As we are waiting the numbness moves up his limbs all the way to his neck. We are out in the sticks a bit and the ambulance was taking forever. I worried that I was watching this kid die. Scary stuff. Turned out to be trauma to the vertebrae (C-5, I think) with some spinal cord swelling. He was hospitalized for a few days ended up being okay. To this day my stomach knots when I think about it.

I just wish the best for both and especially for that unique defender Didi. It's great to read she's got a good attitude and is upbeat. Horrible injury scenario that just happens when great players practice like the want to play and is why this is one of the top 5 programs in the country. Great update on these two nice young ladies. Keep them coming! :)

Prayers for both players. I wonder why Kim don't submit waivers for her transfers. It's really nothing to lose as they will have an extra year of eligibility regardless

Didi is doing good now! I’m sure Kim is going to do the same thing she did with cox last season and have didi sit out the non conference games beside the UConn one and then play her for big 12

The problem with back spinal injuries is that once you have one they can pop back up at anytime. Perhaps not to the degree of the first injury, but still they can be nagging issues that hang on. Just think Nneka this season.

This whole series of events leaves me with a question of were these injuries over hyped?
Didi was literally unable to walk after the initial injury, so I think the concern was warranted. If you look up the usual prognosis for her injury, it is often a lengthy recovery.

Moon sounded like a standard concussion, so I never expected her to miss significant time.

Well, she ended up playing 30 min in Baylor’s first game.:p

Yes she did. Thank God she's doing well and I was wrong. It's amazing to see how she has recovered compared to what she was when it happened (in ICU with no movement from the waist down). Dr's didn't know if she would recover. I'm stunned, but very happy for her. Most people don't realize the severity of her injury.
