Indy 500 | The Boneyard

Indy 500

Indy Car racing is perhaps the greatest self-own in sports history.

Years back a bunch of us were playing softball out here in San Diego on race day. One guy, who grew up in Indiana, brought a radio so he could listed to the race. The rest of us were flabbergasted... LISTEN to a car race???

when you attend, you need a radio to follow the race. The cars go too fast to always identify and lead changes or accidents occur out of your view.

Back in the day, the Indy 500 was so popular Indy made ABC telecast the race on tape-delay. Radio was the only way to know what was going on live.

That's about true. We went to a Brickyard at Indy, coolers allowed. We must have had 3 cases of Bud for 4 people.
The Snake Pit in the first turn used to be crazy, jalopy cars burned, "show us your .....", multiple state police patrolling in teams of 3; now primarily a concert.

And behind the 1st turn, across the street was Mon Cheri. The manager told us on race weekends he has to beef up the quality of his roster so he brings in more staff from St. Louis. St. Louis, huh? Didn't expect that.

Indycars on an oval when the racing package is right is tremendous. The problem with car racing and especially open wheel cars is the better the racing the more dangerous it is for the drivers. The restarts are crazy.

at least we have Lime Rock Park

and from what I've read, the viewers never saw Palou cross the finish line, no checkered flag, and no replay of the accident which caused the yellow. well done.

It is hard to put INDY into context. To get the pole you have to hit 239 or 240 MPH starting the turn into turn one. The leaders are averaging close to 220 MPH laps during the race. Folks really can't relate to it watching from the couch. Meanwhile the drivers are playing with buttons on the steering wheel to reset the car's weight on different parts of the track in traffic. I find it amazing.

IDK.

I was at a friend's house and we put on the race for the last 50 laps or so.
I seem to remember seeing Palou leading the pack to the finish line and all of a sudden I saw yellow lights light up both sides of the track and within a second or two there was a picture of the crunched car. And they cut to the pit to see his team celebrating.
Maybe they missed him come across the bricks under yellow but at that point the race was over.

Not a hot bed of racing talent. Has that dude who wiped out on the pace lap stopped crying yet?
