As we get ready for the Big East opener versus Xavier on Wednesday, I was thinking that we always seem to struggle in our conference openers every year. So I looked back at our historical results and I could not believe our history in conference openers. For being one of the greatest programs in college basketball history over the past 20 years and having so many great teams, it is absolutely unbelievable to look at our record over that time. Here is a summary for those unaware:

UConn's Record in Conference Openers:
Last 8 Years : 1-7
Last 12 Years : 2-10
Last 20 Years : 4-16

Hurley at UConn : 1-5

That is absolutely insane. And this isn't just a recent phenomenon, but one that has been a long term trend for us. I wouldn't even expect a bottom dweller team to have a .200 winning percentage in conference opening games. But for a blue-blood and dominant program like UConn to have a .200 winning percentage in conference openers is unbelievable to me. UConn has more National Championships than conference opening wins since Jan 1 2004. Dan Hurley has a .167 winning percentage in conference openers and has more National Championships than he does conference opening wins.

This is one of those weird stats that is just mind-blowing and incomprehensible to me.

Someone get these stats to Hurley and the team to make sure they don't get full of themselves or complacent again and make sure they come ready to play on Wednesday! :D

A lot of it has to do with the lack of foul calls in the BE. You get mugged. It's just a different style of ball and it starts in the first game.

Also, our first Big East game has traditionally been right after the long break for exams and Christmas, and the team has been rusty.

This year we start early and there won't be rust. This year we win.

I’ve seen a bunch of accounts on X (aka twitter) and elsewhere use these stats in the lead up to today’s game. Heck, I even saw a direct screen shot of this post as a reference on X.

If we extend or Conference opener incompetence, I take full blame for putting this out into the universe and the negative mojo impact and offer myself up for a ceremonial hanging. I should know better by now…my bad!

We must have started on the road a lot

It's all part of the strategy. Get others complacent and believing all they have to do is show up............proven over and again to work but be prepared to not get upset tonight.

It's the Boneyard, so it won't be ceremonial..........

Well we found a stat to make sure we create bad mojo……..felt better about the game tonight until I read this. But at least it says we have a chance…..1-5 under Hurley…..now that I think about it, it does not seem very surprising. Hoping we ended that trend earlier in the year.

I would have to guess he knows his record is not very good in game ones of conference seasons.

Tonight we start a winning streak. The only opener we have won under Hurley was at Butler start of 22-23 season. We all remember the loss to SH to open last year. So at least we know whatever happens it won’t be the end of the world.
