I get the sense that this was in the works for a while and RE2.0 has his staff ready to hit the ground on Jan 2.

How many surprise recruits do you think we get on signing day?

I bet we flip a few superior athletes from some FCS schools.

He had a habit of pulling guys away from other schools at the last minute (Fuller, Anoai, among others), but recruiting is a different game now, both for UConn and in general.

I think the surprises will come from transfers, both the conventional type and the grad/5th year player type. With Diaco in house, who would come here? With an adult running the program again, I think we are much more attractive to transfers.

My guess would be more that he finds a few stopgaps for this year and focuses on coaching the players we have into a respectable bunch. If there's one thing Randy unquestionably can do it's coach mediocre talent to be competitive.

Edsall rarely got highly rated recruits.

But he was excellent at finding kids that would develop into very good players. His judgement of high school talent was his gift.

His gift was doing just enough to beat Liberty, William & Mary, and 5 other teams (while losing miserably to anyone even moderately good) in a beaten-and-battered Big East to get us to 7 wins, a birth in the Roto-Rooter Bowl, and a 200k bonus.

Anything beyond that was dumb (REALLY DUMB) luck.

Do you post often about stuff you are completely ignorant about? or just now?

His overall record was 74 - 70....its not completely ignorant

That was his record. But if you lump in numbers accumulated while he was taking a middle of the road Yankee Conference program into I-A and then the Big East with what he did once he started coaching players who signed up to join a Big East football school, you have a meaningless total.

Nah, he was solid on beating those schools by 20-30+ points. The last 2 regimes it was a sphincter squeeze in the 4th on whether or not we'd even win. Which in turn just made you sick about the rest of the season.

The first four years don't really count if we're being intellectually honest . we should tally up the last six or seven when he had full schollies and a level
Playing field. By my count he won 60 percent of the time which is damn good. Not amazing. But really damn good

How many of those years were with a full complement of scholarships? Recruiting without facilities? As much as his overall record was mediocre, he won 8 or more games in 6 of his final 8 seasons at UConn.

Randy year by year:
1999: 6th place in Yankee Conf. 4 & 7
2000 Independent 3 & 8
2001 Independent 2 & 9
2002 Independent 6 & 6
2003 Independent 9 & 3
2004 Big East Conference 5th 8 & 4 — Won Motor City Bowl against Toledo 39–10
2005 Big East Conference 7th 5 & 6
2006 Big East Conference 7th 4 & 8
2007 Big East Conference T-1st 9 & 4 — Lost Meineke Car Car Bowl against Wake Forest 10–24
2008 Big East Conference 5th 8 & 5 — Won International Bowl against Buffalo 38–20
2009 Big East Conference 5th 8 & 5 — Won PapaJohns.com Bowl against South Carolina 20–7
2010 Big East Conference T-1st* 8 & 5 — Lost Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma 20–48

3 & 2 in Bowls. 6 of 12 seasons with 8+ wins.

I'll very gladly take eight win Randy at $1MM per year vs untested FCS head coach or an FBS coordinator.

Remember when we flipped FCS into NFL players? Me too.
Les Miles would be forced to flip FCS recruits too. Just because a big name coach comes in doesn't mean UConn place in the world with four and five star recruits would necessarily change, particularly in the first 2 years.

I wonder if the kid that de-committed from us because Diaco wouldn't answer his calls will reconsider? Hey, if he liked the school so much like his father said...

He never did before. No reason to think he will magically turn into a good recruiter now.
Hathaway's not here anymore.. and we seem to be in a little bit better situation than we where 6 years ago reruiting wise one would think....

Please show me the record of someone who took a FCS team to FBS and did better than what Randy did. I'll be waiting for your response. For a long, long time.
