Consider this scenario:

Imagine you are approached by a great entity. It could be God, G_d, Allah (yes, I know, all the same deity), Vishnu, or some shapeless/formless force behind the universe...you know, whatever you believe. Upon approaching you, S/He says, "[insert your name here], I've got great news and bad news."

"OK," you respond tentatively, "what's the great news?"

"Well," S/He says, "the great news is that you can reverse the outcome of any past UConn WBB game. Any game that was a loss becomes a win...or vice versa, I suppose, but you won't choose that a win becomes a loss. I know you won't because I'm omniscient."

"That is great news," you say with delight. "So, tell me the bad news."

"The bad news is this: UConn will NOT win a national championship in 2014-15. Reversing the outcome of a prior game will create a butterfly effect. Anything can happen in a six-game, single-elimination tournament, and anything will happen this time. So your reversal comes with a price."

"What if I respectfully decline and take my chances that UConn wins it all in 2015? That seems fair, right?"

"That is fair. And yet, you must choose. The cosmos are restless!"

"OK, can I at least have a moment to think about it?"

"You may, but hurry up- I'm working here!"

There you have it. You can reverse the outcome/result of any past game, but at the dear price of next season.

Given that, what game would you choose? I can think of several, but I'll wait before weighing in...

I would choose DT's freshman year N.C. game.

Actually that was a semifinal game, but we almost certainly would have won the
championship if we had won that ND game.

Still, I'd let that game and all the other losses go.

I want 2015.

I have come to grips with the rare loss.....for the most part.

Title in 15', FTW.

Semi Final game in 2011. Maya should not have left UConn with a loss - that is the biggest one I can think of.

I'd like to see Rizzotti's corner three go in against Tennessee, instead of being blocked.

.-.
The semi-finals against Notre Dame, DT's freshman year.

The semi-finals against Notre Dame 2001 unless I can get Sveta's senior game where she was hurt. Can I change her injury so it does not happen? In that case we may win the game anyway :)

Agree.
I agree. I would have loved seeing Maya leave with 3 NCs. I think we would have beaten TAMU. I also think ND's success against us the following 2 years would have been mitigated.

Another choice would be the loss at Palo Alto in late 2010, the streak breaker. Change the record of 90 to 114.

A third choice would be the 2008 loss to Stanford in the semis. I think we would have beaten Tenn and gotten Maya a NC as a rookie. It also would have given Mel, Ketia, and Charde a NC.

The NCAA Tourney semi-final against Virginia in 1991. If Bascom doesn't get in foul trouble that game, UConn wins, and faces Tennessee for a National Championship four years early. (And since we know that UConn doesn't lose NC games......)

I think I'm breaking the Almighty's rules here but in addition to getting Sveta back, I also want Shea's injury game reversed.

That was the one I was thinking! How long would the streak have gone? UConn had some squeakers to add to their aura of vulnerability: the very close win over ND in January 2011, the shockingly appalling performance against West Virginia, Georgetown-UConn III in the regional semis. So yes, they might have gotten to 114 in a row...and if they'd made it that far, they might have had even more on the line than they did in advance of the game as it was actually played. In any case, yes, I'd like to have seen just how long The Streak could have gone.

Obviously, Geno is 9-6 in national semis, so any of those six losses (1991, 1996, 2001, 2008, 2011, 2012) would be understandable choices.

Another option: that damn 1997 regional final against Tennessee.

Then again, I'm a sucker for Tiffany Hayes. Can we not have ruined her senior night against Saint John's?

2001 has to be the harshest loss in program history. That team was sooooo stacked. We should have won, and the upside to beating ND is that Muffett would not have won.

My first question to this entity would be "Why do you care about UCONN women's basketball?"

Second, "if we're gonna change history, why not Hitler was never born, or I left my ex at the alter (by the way those would be very similar and a tough choice for me ) or something like that?"

But, I'll pass, I'd rather have a shot at the future than the past. Those butterflies can be nasty things.

Rumor used to have it that the old Cowboys Stadium had a hole in the roof so that the Almighty could watch "His team" play football.

So clearly all deities love them some sports. :)

WHAT? Can't He/She see through the roof???

.-.
As much as many losses still bother me, I figure the team and coaches learned something from most of them that ultimately helped winning other/bigger games later on. The 2001 loss to ND fueled the 2002 team to be absolutely dominant. Geno learned some things from the BE Championship loss to ND in 2013 and he then showed that team how to win a national championship. I'll take another championship in 2014-15.

There have been a few games where they played well, worked hard and lost...I can live with that. The game a few years back against St. Johns was just a major clunker., disappointment from many angles. I might take that one back or the one versus Stanford that broke the winning streak. Would have been nice if they made it to 100.

Let it be - we're doing just fine without divine intervention .

I'm fine with how we did. For OTHER teams, however, the answer probably isn't far from the last time they played UCONN- starting with ND.

It's gotta be either the 2001 semis or the 2011 semis. (I rule out 2012 because Baylor would have beaten us anyway.)

Let's suppose nothing else changes, except torpedoing this next year, per the rules. By the way, I think it's safe to assume that under either circumstance, we go on to win the championship

2001
- a proper sendoff for Shea and Svet
- a never-to-be-broken record of 5 consecutive championships
- Diana Taurasi becomes that much more legendary, winning a championship in each of her 4 years (sorry, Stewie)

2011
- a proper conclusion to Maya's career (3 straight championships, matching Taurasi)
- Geno's second 3-peat, also tying Pat's 8 championships while Pat is still an active head coach
- ND and Diggins lose some luster

They will. Forty five and counting. :)

Alex, you have a way of opening some very interesting topics that keep everyone stimulated during this time of little or no women's basketball news. Very appreciative that you do this because there are many Yarder's, myself included who are craving new and interesting topics of discussion. I'll have to peruse through some replies before I decide which game might be my favorite to reverse the outcome but I see where the Notre Dame semi-final loss in 2001 had been mentioned. It just occurred to me that had it been overturned, Diana would have been a four time champion. That would have been unbelievable. As it is, Breanna might be the first four time winner if they can put together two more championship seasons, which isn't totally unrealistic. Thanks again for a great topic.

I'd take the reversal of the 2001 semifinal loss to ND, because to do that Svet & Shea would not have gotten hurt, DT would have won 4 NC's, Muffett would not have an NCAA title, UCONN would have won in the Finals vs Purdue to make it 5 in a row, and Svet would have not been on crutches when her parents came to senior night from Russia!
And even without DIVINE intervention, UCONN WILL win the 2015 NCAA Championship, so I'll have my cake AND eat it too!
