The grittier, mid-major conferences (such as the MAC, the Ohio Valley, the Horizon League and the ACC) will have to go back to the drawing board for next year...

The power conferences are the BE, SEC, B12 and B10.

That's about right.

And 4 tradition-rich programs (or at least current top-10 programs) in Louisville, Kentucky, Kansas, and Ohio State.

On another note, if OSU keeps being a top-10 team every year and wins a title here or there, they're going to nudge their way into the blue blood discussion.

With Sullinger gone, they'll go back to mediocrity.

Yeah, OSU is right there now. They were in the NC game a few years back.

Plus, their recruiting has been very good- I think they are a top 5-8 program right now.

A win by either KU or UK further solifies their status.

Wins by either OSU or UL has them jump to another level I think. UL and OSU, although great programs, haven't won in a long time, esp. OSU.

But, but, but... Butler has been to the NC more than OSU has recently.

I would not put them ahead of the following programs: UConn, Syracuse, Louisville, Georgetown, Maryland, Duke, UNC, maybe NC State, Kentucky, Florida, Kansas, Michigan St., Indiana, UCLA, Arizona. They are on par with Michigan, Georgia Tech and maybe Illinois. I'd rank them about 16-19.

Ever since the Greg Oden class, they recruit much too well for this to be true.

And yet, other than Oden, none of the players who came in or after him have made the NBA. I have huge doubts about Buford. I wouldn't go near him in the first round. 2 NBA players in 5 years is not overly impressive.

I thought "good" recruiting was about getting players who could help you win games. I failed to realize it was measured in collecting NBA talent.

My bad.

Right, but I wasn't talking about the NBA players that they produce. I'm just saying that they recuit awfully good college players pretty consistently, which is why I don't think they're going to fall off the radar after Sullinger leaves.

Conley & Cook came in the same class, they're in the NBA. Turner, Koufus, and Mullens have all come in after, they're in the NBA. Matta will still pull in loaded recruiting classes after Sullinger is gone.

????

Did you even bother reading the post I was responding to? It was about talent?

And what games are you referring to anyway?

Conley and Cook were there before Oden. You're right about Koufos and Mullens. I cpmpletely forgot about them, but then again, they were afterthoughts at OSU. I still don't see how they are any different than a bunch of good schools who are not elite.

I think they are right on the cusp of breaking into that upper tier, beyond UM (a team that is an equal as you said).

I know Maryland won a championship 10 years ago, but OSU is a better program right now and is better than Maryland historically.

I know that Final Fours and Championships are the best markers for how good a program is, but conference championships and a teams annual place in the top 25 are also relevant. OSU has been the top team (along with MSU)in the Big Ten for the past 7-8 years.

NC State is an interesting program. They have two championships, just 3 final fours, and just 22 NCAA appearances. Also, they have been an extremely mediocre program for over 20 years.

If you extrapolated UConn out over 50 years, you get Ohio State. Periods of dominance (most UConn years under Calhoun) interspersed with total WTF periods (NIT years, but they were way worse, check early/mid90s).

Ohio State has 10 FF's and one title. One!

So true, I fail to understand why the NBA arguement is used to put down (sorry I meant evaluate) college basketball teams. Its an amatuer sport.

I didn't make it up. I got incorrect information on this from basketballreference.com.

Do you often accuse people of stuff without asking them to cite a source? Next time, take a deep breath.

It was a question of being elite. there are a lot of teams out there with talented "amateurs" but the elite teams (the top 5-8) have top quality talent. I can't think of any teams in the top tier that don't regularly put guys in.

Historically they are better than some of the teams I mentioned, but going back to the 70s when I started watching, I don't see them as getting near the top tier. A championship this year probably gets them near to Syracuse and Arizona territory, but again, those two teams have been in multiple national championship games in addition to winning one, which is more impressive.
