>> Illinois athletics director Josh Whitman told Illini Inquirer on Monday that the Illini were preparing for a late spring announcement of the formal creation of a Division-I men’s hockey program and a downtown Champaign multi-purpose arena, the culmination of almost four years of planning, fund-raising and coordination with local leaders.

But the pandemic COVID-19 has put at least a temporary pause on that progress.<<

It's still going to happen.

Off campus rink. Interesting.

In a college town like Urbana-Champaign, though, “off campus” doesn’t have much meaning. The line between college and town is less sharply defined in a place like U-C. The walk distance between downtown Champaign and the university campus is around 30 minutes; for comparison, the on-campus Yost Arena is around a 20 minute walk from the main quad at UMich, it takes 22 minutes approximately to walk from Towers or North Campus to Freitas at UConn, and 25 to walk from the “Sleeping Giant” campus to the York Hill satellite campus where the Quinnipiac arena is.

Some of these mid western state universities are huge. I don’t really know Illinois but Ohio State campus is 16500 acres. That’s roughly the size of Meriden. UCONN covers 4400 acres. Being on campus has a shoe different meaning.

I think that's a good thing, Ill. ending their plans. The uniform in Medic's post above is absolutely hideous to my eyes and I would not want to see that on a regular basis. Looks like something out of the movie Tron. No team for them until they come up with a better uni.

Don’t know where you got the info re the size of Ohio State. The main campus in Columbus is more like 1600 acres. UCONN’s main campus is about twice the size of the OSU main campus.

Tiny Catholic colleges.

I'm interested to know what they counted in UConn's acreage total. Did they include the full scope of Horsebarn Hill? That's just about as big as the entire "main" campus section in Storrs but is primarily open fields.

UConn: 4,400 acres
Everyone else: 1,156 acres

Wow
