........Lane Kiffen is leaving Ol Miss and their CFP bound team for in-conference member LSU. Any narative of loyalty, love for the game, commitment to excellence is all horse ...... It's all about the dollars. That's all that matters and we should not expect the kids to behave any differently.....why would they?

I fully expect top NFL prospects to start passing on CFP games. Why put the money at risk?

Lane did ask to coach the team throughout the CFP games but OL Miss said no. Understandable since he would be recruiting for LSU the whole time.

I think the best thing that can happen for most athletic programs is for the top football programs (most of the BiG and SEC and some select other programs) to breakoff and move fully to a professional franchise model. Big money will rule the day and it will have next to nothing to do with school name on the jersey.

The rest of college football can try to put something together that makes sense and is financially feasible. It makes no sense trying to compete with the LSU boosters of the world who will pour money on top of kids in the quest for a NC.

For openers, comparing Ole Miss football to LSU football and believing this isn't much of a step higher would be similar to a few years ago (when Miami made it to the final four) claiming Duke wouldn't be much of a step up from Miami for a men's basketball coach.

Add to this that his salary increased by 71% (there was never a mention of Ole Miss trying to match it) and there is little reason to expect anyone to pass on the opportunity.

The timing if all of this is horrible for those who will be losing coaches, but I have a strong suspicion that this us by design as the few true power brokers know they will never be on the wrong end of one of these coaching changes. Their only true threat (while experiencing success) is a coach leaving for the NFL and that normally happens after the NFL season ends.

Can’t anyone leave a job gracefully anymore?

Lane had a plane sent to move staff and players that wanted to leave (detect) with him.

The system is fundamentally broken because coaches jump ship and players enter the portal before the post-season games & bowls even take place. Now we have teams competing for the CFP that are losing coaches.

Not good at all for college football.

Everybody needs to read "Billion Dollar Ball".
Covers the early days of this insanity, starting with DeLoss Dodds, the AD at Texas who accelerated the monetizing of college sports.
If I recall correctly, one of the inventive things he did was "spinning off" the athletic department into a private corporation, thus allowing him to do things beneficial to Texas without the encumbrance of some rules others followed. Note his quote about football...........

DeLoss Dodds
, the former athletic director at the University of Texas, was the official featured in the book Billion Dollar Ball. The book features his perspective on how college football had become a massive, business-like enterprise, quoting him as saying, "Football is the train. You ride it for all it's worth," as The New York Times reported.
  • Role: Dodds was the men's athletic director at the University of Texas for 32 years, from 1981 until his retirement in late 2013.
  • Influence: During his tenure, he oversaw a period of significant growth in the athletic department, which included major deals like the Longhorn Network and extensive facility upgrades.

As long as viewership keeps being high no one will care.
That’s my point. Viewership won’t remain high if 5 of the Top CFP teams are a shell of themselves.

Viewers want to see best teams matchup against best teams. If players and coaches are sitting out, what’s the point? If the viewers start to have apathy towards the product, and viewership declines, expect media partners to push back.

Again let’s see what the viewership looks this CFP. The only way to solve the player situation is to have a players collective agreement.

Yes college football has seen a paradigm change, and the admonishment "may you live in interesting times" is upon us.
