The timeline in that article was off.

The biggest glaring mistake: Missouri was already begging to get into the B1G in 2010 when the B1G announced they were looking at expansion and candidates. We all know the B1G took Nebraska (Missouri had not yet approached the SEC - not until the next year), so with Nebraska still on the table, why would they take Missouri?
