OT: If a college coaching staff could play on their team, which team would be best?

Apropos to tonight’s game….Michigan.
The Memphis staff could probably still produce.

George Mason has a solid starting 5.

Point Guard: Assistant Coach Duane Simpkins.
  • 6'0. Averaged 12.1p, 4.4a in 95-96 for Maryland
Guard: Assistant Coach Nate Tomlinson.
  • 6'3 185. Career averages at Colorado: 5.2p, 3.1a, 40.6 3p%.
Forward: Graduate Manager Isaiah Tate.
  • 6'4 214. Averaged 6.2p, 41.2 3p% in his senior year at George Mason in 10-11.
Small Ball 5: Head Coach Kim English.
  • 6'6 200. Averaged 14.5 ppg for Missouri in 11-12 for Missouri
YMCA Old Guy X-Factor: Associate Head Coach Dennis Felton.
  • He's 58 and played two seasons at Howard. He'd make those heady dimes to the shooters on this squad.

We have the two pg system with Taliek and Dan.

Realistically, the winner will be a low or mid major because they will have younger staff.

Penny is 50 but looks like he could play 30 minutes tonight. But the answer is probably Loyola, Drew Valentine is 31 and could definitely still play

Yup. Some low- or mid-major we haven't heard of with a staff of all 30-ish former players.

Any team with at least one old guy is basically doomed. A younger team is just going to isolate them and have a guard beat them 1v1 over and over again.

The only younger coach on our staff is Luke, and he never even played. Dan, Kimani are pushing 50. Tom is 56. The only teams were beating are ANCIENT.

Yeah I’d like to see Larry Brown throw down a monster jam on someone
The current team plus Penny,Wallace,Toppert,Forrest,Boyd…
Larry would be the player coach with the occasional throw down..or throw up.

Penny is 50? Jeez what a sobering reminder that the early 90s were 30 years ago

Depending on who they bring in to round out the staff next year, I hate to say that it may be Duke. Pretty young staff of pretty recent players once K is gone.

Yeah, Carrawell has to be their oldest coach other than K right now. And he's what, mid-40s?

Yep, he's 44 and then Nolan Smith at 33 and Scheyer at 34. It's not a bad squad.

I think Kimani still has a strong performance in him--he's got some swag. Tom and Dan are really going to kill the team though. Luke is the wild card. If he has a decent stroke from 3, we might pull of an upset win or two.

Vanderbilt (Stackhouse and Michael Curry) could probably beat their own team.

Juan Dixon at Coppin State maybe?
Good call.

Just looked into their coaching staff. Not the same talent level as George Mason, but definitely younger with the ability to play a squad of five all 43 and younger:

The little point guard: Director of Basketball Performance Chris Hays. 5'7 165.
  • Played three seasons at Slippery Rock. Averaged 3.8p in his final season in the 14-15 season.
The do-everything guard: Head Coach Juan Dixon. 6'3 165.
  • 20.4p, 4.6r, 2.9a, 2.6s, 46.9 fg%, 39.7 3p% in his senior year at Maryland (wow, what a season!)
The hustle guard: Assistant Coach Charles Agumagu. 6'0 185
  • Was a walk-on at Barry. Minimal PT between the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 season.
Forward: Assistant Head Coach Kent Auslander. 6'6 200.
  • Walked-on at Maryland before playing two seasons at Coppin State: 6.6p, 3.1r, 37.3 3p% in the 2018-2019 season.
The big: Associate Head Coach John Auslander. 6'7 220.
  • 21 points in 132 career minutes as a walk-on at Maryland. Played between 11-12 and 13-14 seasons.
Much younger than George Mason, but I still think George Mason wins. Do you take George Mason's high-end talent over Coppin State's athleticism, overall size and youth?
