Just took a whack at how a 85 man squad should be divided by scholarships. I'm thinking 42 offense, 40 defense and 3 special teams.
ST- 3, kicker, punter, long snapper.
I've budgeted 40 for defense. I've 14 for defensive line, 12 linebackers and 12 defensive backs.

ILB - 6
OLB-6
CB -8
S - 6
On offense which I think usually sustains more injuries I have 42.
QB -5, this is a volatile position with a lot of transfers and attrition in the upper classes. So I figure you want to bring in two almost ever year. Plus, this position is often injured. Plus, plus, you better enough competition and depth to find one good one. We're seen what the position looks like when its under manned. It's ugly. So, yes, five QBs.
RB-6 Maybe one of these is a fullback.

TE-6
Offensive line, 16, enough for a three deep. Plus since you can move interior guys around a bit easier I tilt toward extra OTs.

I look at the UConn roster as currently constructed and it leans toward LB. THere are about 16 LB on scholarship with 2 leaving and 2 coming in. There are different ways to construct a team. A true 3-4 might lean toward more LB as Diaco has done. I like having extra defensive line. Note that we didn't give any scholarships to DL today. The extra beef is nice to have on third down and goal line.
