I was getting a bite to eat earlier today.... and I paid the cashier.... he asked me how my day was going.. I said pretty good. ... he mentioned he was suprised because I was wearing a Duke shirt. I told him everyday I wear a Duke shirt is a good day. :) He went on babbling something about UNC... and a female entered the conversation... i was just standing admiring the cheesecake slices in the display case. My ears perked up when she said Huskies.. I was thinking ... wow.... what are the odds of a Washington Husky fan down in the Triad of NC on a Tuesday Morning.

ME: I heard you say Husky.... what kinda Husky are you talking about

Her: UCONN........ Im a fan of the women's team....

ME: UCONN.... are you from Connecticut

Her: No

ME: Then why are you a UCONN women's fan

Her: Cause I like Winners

Ha! Can't argue with that logic.

My husband makes fun of me for being a "frontrunner" since I didn't go to UConn. I just told him I only like to watch good basketball, and UConn plays good basketball. He's come around. (And he went to Duke!)

Recently, my DIL asked me why I liked UConn women's basketball. I lost her halfway through my list. :)

1. I grew up in Connecticut--see my handle.

2. My B.A. is from UConn.

3. My sister, who has 2 girls and has long been interested in girls/women's sports, was a fan before me. It gives us something else in common. (She's 10-0 at Final Four games.)

4. I hated the way that Tennessee played, and UConn was the only team that could beat them in a big game.

5. I like the way UConn plays.

6. I spent 15 years in the Philly area and "get" Geno, though he makes me wince every once in a while. (His daughter Ally says the same thing.)

7. I like the kind of player that Geno recruits. Sue and Maya, in particular, are great role models.

8. I love the fan base and board(s).

9. In the history of team sports, there have been few periods of extended greatness: Lombard's Packers, Wooden's Bruins, the Yankees of Ruth and Gehrig, the Russell's Celtics, etc. It's fun being part of something special and historic.

I'm also a Triangle resident and a UCONN Huskies fan. Glad to know there are others. Of course growing up near UCONN and being a Connecticut resident until retirement brought me here has something to do with it. Go Huskies!

I met a truck load of UConn fans in Knoxville, Tn. ----They were from Derby!!!

I got no problem with this. You have Connecticut roots. I should have called the young lady out for being a frontrunner  I hate frontrunners !!!!!!! If you are born and raised in the state..... you need to be a fan of a team in your state..... not some team up in Yankee land

tri-duk
It's a bit wordy to have to say... "...not some team up in Yankee land".
I believe the most proper terms revolve around various, subtle forms of "d-mnyankee"
The generic form... "up North" is also convenient.

[I'm a half-breed... mah Daddy was from Berkley, Va (he always said "Naw-"... 'cause no one knew where the hell Berkley was) and my Mother was a d-mnyankee from Hartford.]

I've seen this UCONN fan in the store from time to time........ ran into her again a few weeks ago.....

Random UCONN fan in NC: So are you ready for March Madness ?

Me: Well.... we didnt make it this year... :(

Random UCONN fan in NC: Wait... I thought I heard that Duke got a #4 seed

Me: Oh.....oh... you are talking about Men's basketball... yeah... Duke made it....

Random UCONN fan in NC: Ok... thats what I thought..

Me: I thought you were talking about Women's college basketball....... my team didnt make it.

Cocky Random UCONN fan in NC: (With a big smile on her face) Well my team made it..... then she turns (still smiling) and walks away

You have been missed. Wishing a speedy repair of your team under better leadership!

I m from NY, went to school in MA then stayed here. I never followed women's BB until an encounter with Carl Adamec that tuned me into UCONN womens BB back in 89-90 season. He told me then that this Coach Geno was going to take this program places. I feel fortunate to witness all this great coach and his many teams have accomplished. My daughter grew up watching them with me and now attends UCONN.

I'd wager that at least a plurality of fane are excluded from your: #!, #2, #3
There are no girls anywhere in my immediate family (including my first wife)
And I have absolutely nothing to do with Connecticut or the U (except my latest boat is living in Westbrook).

#5 hits it on the head for me and I admire your wisdom and agree wholeheartedly with your #6.

Triad, I truly wish your team gets a better coach so it's being a good day for you can be more than wearing your t-shirt

Nonna, Dee, Maya, and Vince, all on June 11!!!
...Joe Montana, Gene Wilder, Hugh "Bertie" Laurie, Jacques Cousteau, Adrienne "You got a driver's license tucked away in there" Barbeau...

...A pretty good day, all around.

That's Philly speak (learned from Geno's many stands at the podium after his 11 championships).

Triad - very happy to see you back active on this board! Tough year for you I am sure and the hits kept coming after the last game.

I actually found online and bought a Duke Women's Basketball Shirt by Nike a few months ago....... hopefully soon I can wear it with my head held up high and a smile on my face instead of a sullen expression
