I like this thread's title, and I like Hurley's quoted first sentence: "Obviously, I did a horrible job of preparing these guys for this game." As to the following sentences, I agree with this... A good discussion, but I'll still roll things back to that first sentence by Dan Hurley. Though simplistic, I believe that better preparation would have resulted in a large enough margin during the game that Dan Hurley could have put more players on the court in order to learn more about in-game skills and combinations perhaps not yet seen. Instead, he had to concentrate on not screwing up up and suffering an embarrassing loss. As such, the game represented a lost opportunity, and that's the basis for most of the comments here. I counted at least 3 very poorly chosen shots by Cole that quite fortunately went in, and a similar number of shots that Jackson reflexively passed up which gave UMES the confidence to pull back from guarding him with more care. And Adama similarly continued to take lower percentage shots. If continued, these patterns will likely result in some frustrating losses against upcoming competition. As to last night, I am so thankful for Whaley. I fully endorse this paragraph: MSU & UMES were both games that required adjustments to player unavailability, both known in advance and occurring in-game. This too will be a theme within the season, so I'm adding it in addition to the fixes above. I think there will continue to be a variety of takes that reflect anxious feelings about whether this year will be good or great, as well as how much of either. Given the past 7 seasons, that shouldn't come as any surprise.
