"Coach DeLeone knows so much football he could wallpaper his house with plays." We have heard this 1,000 times. I get it. He has been around forever and is learned in the game of football. But you know what? This is what I see:
1) His offensive "system" took a team KNOWN for a punishing run game and respectable pass coverage for the last decade and destroyed it in his 1st season in charge, despite having a lot of proven experience up front. A reasonable mind could perhaps give him somewhat of a pass to install his system, blah blah blah. Whatever-the OLine went backward in every way last year. The dropoff was TOO big in my opinion for a free pass here.
2) Year 2 always shows the most progress in a new system. That's how the saying goes. Couldn't run for S&$t against UMASS and more of the same today. I'm sure we will continue to make progress this season, but I fully expected our "launch point" for this season to be well ahead of where it is right now.
3) His Oline had THREE false starts in the 1st half alone. Including one due to his offensive "wrinkle" of replacing an effective Wildcat QB with a Wide Receiver to try and do the same job. Clever.
4) Three instances of 3rd or 4th and very short. Give to a FB who never carries the ball. Stopped. QB sneak with a SMALL QB. Stopped. Call a pass play that doesn't even result in a throw. Stopped. Clever.
5) I think our team is talented enough that we can have a successful season. We have a defense with a great deal of potential and a lot of experience.
As for DeLeone, I will be happy to see him retire. Even with a fair amount of improvement from the offense he would still only rise to the level of "acceptable" in my book. I am guessing he will get to that level, but as a fan I'm mad that I have to be hopeful we "rise" to acceptable offense.
