How do these college students get recruited? Do they travel with the team on multi-game trips so that our women have practice time on the road? How are they compensated?

I don't believe they can travel with team. Hence why they need 10-12 players available on road trips to get certain things done.

I don't think they are compensated, except they probably get a bit of swag.

Some articles seem to verify that at least some male practice squads are volunteers. But if they all weren't then one would think they would be eligible for workers compensation if they get injured.

I found 2 articles from 2019 & 2020 that seem to indicate/insinuate that the Duke practice squad plays for breakfast (meals) & some tee shirts.
And the practice squad for the Connecticut Sun were definitely volunteers who paid $20 to try out for it.

I don't know about their status, but from 2009 to now, each season the coaches in their thankfull speach talked about them, practice players should not be forgotten, the same way as walk-ons
