Just a thought to pass the time

We have been involved with top prospects and hear about them watching our tourney runs, building relationships with the coaches, having campus visits and watching practices, communicating with other players on social media and in person at events, and we know UConn produces videos for them. All the top programs are competing this way. @housekeys posted a Mark Jackson podcast interview of Dan Hurley in another thread which was very insightful. These kinds of interviews help everybody understand Hurley as a human being, the players he is looking for, his human vulnerabilities, etc. I doubt UConn is directing recruits to any of these types of candid open podcasts, but it would seem like a really good tool for recruits to learn 'Hurleyism' while not being 'pitched' per se. I haven't specifically heard a player say that he or his family have watched these types of interviews to learn more about Hurley & the program. He validates his sense of obligation to make players better, get them to the league, the pressure he feels to fulfill promises, the 6 day a week routines of his players, the priorities he wants to see in recruits and their families, etc A lot of ground is covered which would seem important to a recruit's decision. Has anybody stumbled on recruits referencing their interest being validated by any of the many candid public interviews Hurley has been doing, or is it been totally just their direct interface with the program?

I’m not sure I’ve seen a coach do as many public showings as Hurley. The guys energy is endless. Tip of the cap to his agent and marketing team.

This interview was intense. Completely unfiltered. An honest assessment of the pros and cons of growing up with a demanding, unrelenting father.

The most detailed account of his struggles in college and the steps he has taken to overcome them.

Explaining how his basketball struggles and successes help him understand and relate to a wide range of players. Relating how Bob Sr. lived for only two things. An obsessed relationship with his teams/players. And with his remaining time a devotion to his family. Senior had no hobbies, no recreational distraction and no other pursuits. Dan is doing the exact same thing. After watching this most players will come away believing that there isn’t any other coach who is more dedicated to his players and teams than Hurley.

With social media being what it is these interviews will filter to many basketball players and their coaches. Not every player will have what it takes to play under Hurley. But most will have respect for him and his dedication to his players. These interviews are another opportunity to build on the positivity surrounding UConn men’s basketball program.

With the retirement of good coaches like Tony Bennett and Jay Wright and the rapid changes in the college basketball landscape that led them to retirement Hurley will be the poster coach for what it takes to navigate this environment.

He will not only be the ambassador for UConn but for college basketball coaches in general.

Imo he wants this role. More than that he believes he has a responsibility to pursue this role. It build's upon what his father brought to the sport.

He has the tools to accomplish it. He is intelligent, articulate, genuine and someone who believes in the things he says.
