I think we established after last year's season that undefeated or not, no team outside the P5 and Notre Dame has any chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

If Notre Dame doesnt qualify with one loss, they just might have to join a conference as a full member.

The worst part is that if somehow UCF made it, they'd be a 4 seed and would probably get rolled by Alabama and the optics of it would be terrible for future G5 contenders, even though I think Bama will demolish pretty much anybody they play in the first round.

UCF wouldn't score more than 17 on Bama. That's not saying UCF is bad, it's more say Alabama is just an nightmare matchup for just about every team in the country. Especially now they have more a passing game than just a game manager and great backs

Realistically you can eliminateUCF USF NC STATE Iowa Washington State West Virginia and Kentucky. If it looked like any one of those teams was #4 Ohio State would magically get back in due to its strength of schedule even if it were not true. This is a made for tv event where name recognition trumps everything else.

Bama has played six games against P5 opponents and defeated them by an average margin of 35.7 points. That's just not supposed to happen.

Notre Dame is improved over last year and the only team stopping them is USC.

ND fans have said along that they will not give up their indepence in football even for a chance to play for a championship. Of course the AD and the school have never commented on that (that I know of).

Jack Swarbrick is on record several times as saying only a P4, conference champ only playoff system would cause ND football to join a conference. He affirmed again in August that independence is more important to ND than an "easier" path to the playoffs:

"The reason why Notre Dame has the flexibility to schedule such marquee matchups every year is because of its independent status. Swarbrick doesn’t see the Irish joining a conference any time soon, even if it would make a path to the College Football Playoff easier.

“We don’t choose independence because it helps the football program,” Swarbrick said. “We would have a potentially easier path to a championship in the current model if we were in a conference. We choose independence because of its benefit for the University and what football represents.

It’s our ability to play in New York and California … the ACC lets us travel from Miami to Boston, we’ll play in iconic venues like Lambeau Field — that’s what we need to do. Don’t get me wrong, our focus has to be winning football games and competing for national championships, but we have this secondary obligation with the program to use it as a vehicle to promote the school, and we look for every opportunity to do that."
