Looking forward, would someone be able to tell me how we match up against SMU? I don't know too much about them.
We have a shot blocker?Another team that plays slow, for context here's adjusted tempo according to KenPom of the last couple
Drexel - #99 (W)
Villanova - #346 (L)
USF - #230 (L)
UCF - #334 (L)
SMU - #330
(the whole conference plays very slow FYI)
They are going to try and make UConn play as much half court basketball as possible. Need to try and speed up the pace of the game, that's when the scales tip in UConn's favor.
UCF averages 11.6 turnovers a game (top 50 in the country) and UConn forced 16 which is good but did a bad job getting out on the run (only 7 fastbreak points). Cobb was very good at looking for the guards on the outlet to get this started earlier in the season but I saw him often just settle for slowing things down and pass to a guard right next to him. They need fastbreak points badly to minimize reliance on half court offense (or lack thereof).
SMU averages 11.4 turnovers a game (#32 in the country) so going to require making a team play worse than normal. Alternatively, no one on SMU is taller than 6'9" so there should be a some opportunities to block shots and lead to some fastbreak opportunities.
Regardless, this team cannot be content with just making a nice defensive play then walking the ball up.
We have a shot blocker?
Had a shot blocker (Yakwe). Wilson also is very good and Polley has shown at times he can chip in as well. Carlton was very good at the beginning of the year at protecting the rim against mid-majors but has been ok to bad since that point.
Might be a game to finally give Whaley some minutes. He can block some shots.
My prediction? Do we hit our shots or does it look like there is a lid on the rim? That's pretty much what determines the outcome of our games. If Polley continues to be unable to hit anything, and Jalen misses everything that isn't a layup, we've got problems.
you mean if we make more baskets than the other team, we might win?
daaayummm. you crushed it. most excellent observations, especially that one about the rebounders lengthening the outlet passes..the data is awesomesauce too, in that the two lowest shot %'s supports my thoughts re: coach meaning fsu and ucf (they of the now two year run of being a top defensive team in the nation) on his list of 'the 2 best teams that we've played so far.' muchas gracias for the thoughtfood.Well that’s certainly true, but I mean shoot high 40’s minimum from the floor, over 33% from 3 and 70% from the line.
