The first thing is that we had a very very good team that season and we got derailed in a tragic way. I wasn’t at the game. But I remember watching on TV with friends who were neutrals at the start but were solidly in our corner at the end. It felt like we had to beat two teams: Notre Dame and the officials. The calls just felt unfair but I can’t remember if they actually were or not. This was the year we lost Jasper Howard. There were several gut wrenching losses against Rutgers and WVU following his death. The Rutgers player that scored the winning TD was Jasper’s friend and he dedicated the TD to him (argghhhh!!!!). So the win was a bit cathartic and made those losses seem a little less painful. Notre Dame did some sort of pregame thing to honor Jasper and as far as I could tell they wed very classy about the loss. It seems like the win should have been more defining and something we could have built on. I am sure Rutgers PR could have found a way but Notre Dame was kind of pathetic at the time and Charlie Weis was on his way out. We should have checked our egos at the door and signed up for that series that Notre Dame wanted to have with us. That relationship might have been helpful.
