Yup, I'm back again.

Tickets book, hotel in NYC book, friend scheduled to give my dad and I a ride to Hartford.

I've even got an idea of what craft brews to bring to the tailgate!!! (Saint Arnolds Pumpkinator, 8th Wonder Dome Foam, Karbach Rodeo Clown, ect.)

Who is down for acoulpe Houston Cougars to join their tailgate? We will bring H-town beer, share with us your traditions and cooking ways!!!

Also, is Louis' Lunch in New Haven worth stopping for?

One of these BYers will tell you where they tailgate, but the atmosphere is so pleasant you will have a good time sticking with one or floating. Your Cougar jersey will stick out, but in a friendly way. Stick around and locations will be shared.

I've tried to take my father in law from Louisianna to Louis Lunch (at his request) 2x when he's been in town and both times they were closed for the week for vacation. Never been myself and I've heard mixed reviews.

You can't go wrong with Pepe's pizza though. If the line is too long and you don't want to wait you can go to "the spot" next door and it's essentially the same thing (it's owned by Pepe's and was actually the original location).

LL is a "been there, done that" place - good but not memorable.

Louis Lunch is an experience only if you want to relive being a yalie in 1899. It is an experience but you won't go back for seconds.

Sounds like you plan on a fair amount of driving if you are staying in NYC, coming to E. Htfd, and want to hit up Louis Lunch in New Haven.

For a decent burger, I'd suggest a Ted's Steamed Cheeseburger, unless you really, really, really crave a piece of ground meat on untoasted Wonder Bread and no catsup (plus ridicule if you ask).

I recall that Ted's has a truck at Rentschler, so you may not even have to drive down to Meriden for the original.

If you are walking around Blue Lot & entering from East Gate, my crew is on the left side of the drive way (same side as UConn Tailgating Ambulance- outside of Gate C & the Dog House). Look for a blue Dodge Pickup & a flag pole balloon at the top, U.S. Flag, Husky Flag, & 6 Flag). Why 6? In honor of departed player Jasper Howard. We generally have UConn & Army National Guard pop up tents at the site. Stop by for some camaraderie. Generally tons of food & beverages going on.

LL is a novelty stop. It's a good burger, but Prime 16 and Plan B are WAY better.

Plan B burgers are better than most but they are not steamed. Steam burgers are local to the Southern New England region and I was under the impression the OP wanted that experience.

My opinion remains unchanged on Louie's Lunch. Burgers are not meant to be served on untoasted white bread.

Louis' burgers cooked on their antique, vertical gas grill can still be great. Beauty's in the eye of the beholder , but some of us like very low fat content, ground beef on toast with the works; a dollop of Cheese-it and slices of onion and quality tomatoes. No idea why anyone needs ketchup or other condiments with very good quality beef, but to each his own.

For people familiar with Louis', it can be funny to an inside joke observing newbies asking for ketchup or mustard or incredulous that neither are served. How the latter miss multiple, decades+ old signs, a few shirts, etc. broadcasting no ketchup is available nor why they think it's necessary is a mystery.

Unfortunately, the ornery son now running Louis' has been working hard to ruin a time honored business. His deceased father was far from friendly, but he cared much more about the family business started a few to several generations back. Same quality ingredients - ambivalent attitude = still worth an occasional couple with the works and a Foxon Park white birch.

A) the bread is toasted

B) if there's one thing that is not meant to be done to burgers, it's steaming them
