Marist was 5-6 on Dec. 31, with one of the losses coming at St. Bonaventure on Dec. 18. During 2012, the Red Foxes have won 21 of 22 games to win the MAAC, get a #12 seed, and drive through to the 2nd round. Considering their performance in 2012, you have to feel that #12 was not necessarily a proper seed.

St. Bonaventure is a #5 seed and has done almost as well in 2012, going 18-1 and also winning their last game in 2011. The one loss was in the Atlantic 10 tournament finals to Dayton.

Marist's strengths is it doesn't give away points at the FT line, gets a lot of assists and doesn't turn the ball over, shoots a lot of 3-pters and makes 7 a game, and it is one of the top FG% defense teams and and is 40th in scoring defense. It's weaknesses are that it gets outrebounded and the opponents shoot the 3 very well against them. Corielle Yarde is among the national leaders in a bunch of categories involving shooting percentage, assists, and A\TO margin.

St. Bonaventure is similar to Marist in many of the categories above, but there some key differences. The Bonnies lead the nation in fewest turnovers, but on the other hand they get few assists, though they shoot the 3 well. They also get few blocks or steals and have a mediocre turnover margin despite their own lack of TOs, but teams just do not shoot well against them either inside or outside the stripe. Jessica Jenkins is 4th in the nation in 3-pters per game, and Megan Van Tatenhove shoots better than 50% per game.

Should be a great defensive-oriented matchup in the first ever game between NY teams in the NCAA tourney.
