Things are gettin' curiouser and curiouser with Brenda's crew....

[edit: I see now that there was mention of this in an earlier thread 'Halftime scores' , but perhaps it might have escaped notice for some, as it did initially for me]

UMD won't be any more competitive with us than UNC and Duke have been. They are terrible.

VT got crushed at home by Cincy and UNC this year.

Awful performance (check out the TOs) even if Thomas was out.

Not just Virginia Tech, but 7-14 VT. As in riding a five-game losing streak, their second such streak of the year, VT. This has to be considered a humiliating defeat.

Really not sure what to make of anyone in the ACC right now.

The first time in 6 games that Va. Tech scored over 50, and they put up 75 on the Terps. Obviously, they missed Thomas, but this is shocking. I thought that Maryland might lose about 4, maybe 5, before the NCAAs--to Duke, Miami, maybe UNC, and 1 other, but never to Va. Tech at College Park. So much for a 2 seed!

that might be one of the worst losses ever for a top 10 team. stuff like that happens all the time in the men's game. can anyone think of worse performances by a team with elite 8 aspirations?

The question of MD being a dark horse for not only ranking, but being a serious contender for the elite eight winner and if that happens a serious Final Four winner. It does happen much more often with the men,but I am sure we can come up with a few. I know the blow out of TN by ND is in example of a continued top 10 team being humiliated. I know ND is deserving of their #2 ranking and the game took place in South Bend, but having watched the game it was a shameful performance. Will have to think of better examples. Terrible showing at home against a very poor 7-14 team.

I believe MD would stand a chance vs Stanford on a neutral floor.

Not a chance.

Don't worry, TriD, we all have it happen.

I'll feel different about MD if any when they show they can play D. My 87 year old dad went to Bliss Electric School post WW2 in College Park. It was later folded into UMD so I want them to succeed. I just don't see it.

BTW, I like the picture of cousin Grizz.

2001-2002 Duke.... went to the Final 4, and finished 31-4. Had an early season lost to TOLEDO..... an average MAC team. 4 losses that year... a Final 4 loss to Oklahoma to Tennessee.. to South Carolina (which we avenged in the Elite 8 in Raleigh)... and to TOLEDO. TOLEDO

Generally speaking, if there's going to be some kind of WTF loss by an elite team, it's usually early in the season before the team can gel and the coach can smooth out wrinkles in the offense, etc. WTF losses by a top-ranked women's team in late January are as rare as hen's teeth.

Like Geno said, no one plays any defense in that league. So if you have a bad shooting night and the other team gets hot, watch out. Your defense sure isn't going to save you like it does in the Big East.

Exactly, and that is why Duke is the best option in the conference. They at least have a basic knowledge of D even if it can be improved. JPM coached in the B1G where defense can be a premium and GG had some nice defensive teams.

It looks that way. The Duke-Uconn game will answer a lot of questions.

It's not that unusual for top 10 but not elite teams to lose badly to legit contenders, especially on the road. I'd say Duke last year against UConn was far more egregious than Tennessee-ND. Tenn quit; Duke showed very little evidence of even trying. And they were ranked #3 at the time.

But neither game was as bad as losing to a VT team that lost to William and Mary.

It's true that there are only a handful of elite teams in WCBB. But I guess it shows that on any given night, a not-so-talented team can beat a team loaded with HS AAs if they bring their A game. To me this has always been the most impressive thing about UConn's dominance. Teams (usually, ahem UNC) bring their A-game against the Huskies, and very rarely do they lose to a team that is unranked or not as talented. I mean, to keep your concentration for 90 games in a row is unbelievable, I don't care what people say about the state of the game. The focus and level of competitiveness makes us very lucky as fans :)

Indeed, it's rare to see UConn lose badly to a team or to lose to a team that just has no business competing with UConn.

There were some bad losses during the "dark ages" of 2005-07, but even then nothing like losing to a bad team- more like losing badly to good teams. UNC, for instance, totally owned UConn during that stretch. Now they can't even compete.

UConn loss to Iowa State.
That game didn't bother me as the double digit loss to an unranked Arizona State in December 2004. That was the only time I was absolutely mortified by a UConn loss. It was compounded when the Huskies got blown out by Michigan State at the Civic Center a couple weeks later. Even though State was a Top 10 team, it still felt like the Huskies hit bottom in that game.

For me the worst UConn loss in recent memory had to be the 2007 shellacking to LSU in the Elite 8. I mean, it's one thing to lose, but that was not even competitive. Sylvia Fowles was/is a hell of a player, though.

Not too many really poor efforts like that in recent UConn lore. That's how you don't lose two in a row in almost 19 years.

I wonder if the key is the not-so-talented team bringing their A game or the talented team bringing their C or D game. (not to be confused with their CD game, which is better than A)

.I think it should be noted that the Maryland Mock Turtles lost to the Virginia Tech Hokie Turkeys. In other words, 2 disabled animals were fighting each other in that game.

I can't come up with it right now, but in spite of vociferous denials by the folks in Blacksburg the source of the term 'hokie' is a farming term for a castrated turkey. And if you don't believe it, have a look for yourself:
