In addition, you will have the right to extend the term of your employment by up to one (1) additional year in the event that UConn Men's Basketball program receives from the NCAA a penalty resulting in a reduction of scholarships or a material limitation on recruiting or player visits that is based on activities or conduct that occurred prior to the effective date of your employment at UConn.

I really hope he doesn't end up handcuffed with recruiting to start off. I'd rather lose a scholarship than have reduced visits and contact

After the excitement people feel from his press conference, having him locked in for 7 years sounds like a great thing. Not hoping for any penalties obviously but there's a silver lining here at least.

I'm glad it has language about what happens if we face recruiting sanctions and nothing about what happens if we face a postseason ban.

That's a big nut but the sliding scale, mitigation and offset make it more sensible than the existing deal.

If Hurley terminates contract before April 1, 2019, he would owe UConn $8 million.
Drops to $5M, $3.5M, $3M, $2M, $0

Incentive package allows Hurley to add contract yrs, get future pay increases and one-time bonuses each season, but all of that is subject to team's multi-year APR being at least 950.

Seems less one sided than prior deals.

Glad to hear about offset and duty to mitigate. Assuming he isn't unemployable, those amounts would be far more than would actually be owed.

Just at the flat rate, that's a good buyout structure for a freshly hired starting coach. Zero chance he gets let go before 3 years, so you are looking max $4.5m after that. 5% chance he'd get let go after 4th, which is only $3m. Obviously, nobody wants to talk about it, but it's a reality of the business, as we've learned the hard way.

Just no un-deserved extensions and we're good.
