There's been some rumbling that Goestenkors is USC's top choice. Of course, just a rumor... but what are your thoughts? I think she would be a fantastic hire for USC if it's true.

Of course, I would think she'll immediately battle Stanford for the Pac-12 bragging rights, say within two or three years.

Before the TX job, I would've said yes she could challenge Stanford in a few years. Now, I'm skeptical. But yes still would be a good hire.

Note that cal, uCLA, and wash are on the rise, so PAC slightly less fertile territory.

Goestenkors was great recruiting the MD/PA/DC/VA/OH areas, with some NY/NJ and Texas thrown in. She struggled to recruit in California. McCallie, on the other hand, has plucked three MCDAA players out of CA (Gray, Chidom, Cooper), plus another top player (Chloe Wells). For a school that has watched talented player after talented player leave the state, Goestenkors would not be the right fit.

But in terms of improving existing players and their skills, she wold be great.

I expect to see her take more time off.

Why do you think she struggled mightily creating California players, as opposed to being able to keep the Eastern players at Duke?

Not sure, especially when McCallie has had so much success doing so. Could be a personality issue; Goestekors just related better to the East Coast kids. McCallie also relies on her assistants more, whereas Gail was always on the road recruiting.

GG never has come across as having a very warm personality, IMO. The quality of the academics makes it easy to recruit if you are the Duke coach. I'm not sure that GG would fare too well in CA.

Which top coaches, or coaches at top 25 programs do you consider as having warm personalities ??? Cant think of any off the top of my head.

Very interesting point. CVS for example, is quite gracious in person - but warm, not so much. However, we (as fans) don't see them in the same way as players or prospective players. Again, speaking from what I know, CVS's former players adore her and she certainly has had recruiting successes over the years.

Within very limited experience, incidently, I have never met (all in passing) any coach that did not come off as gracious, although I have heard some specific coaches are not - none I have met. Of course, I never tried to say anything more than "hello" or compliment a success.

Sorry, but Duke was in the ACC cellar when Goestenkors took over. It is not just about academics. That ignores how hard it was to build the program and the tremendous work Goestenkors did in doing so. It is quite myopic to dismiss 15 years of work as just based on the school's academics.

USC should be very easy to sell: top 25 academically; strong alumni association; major city; great weather; gorgeous campus; tons of athletic success in a range of sports.

She should have stayed at Duke.

No she shouldn't have. The Duke AD was terrible and did not support her one bit, even with all her success. It wasn't a great working environment. Why stay at a job where you aren't valued, no matter how good you are?

I hope she lands back on her feet.

Did i say it is "just" about academics? Don't get you knickers in a twist. GG absolutely built that program into what it is today. However, you must admit that the academics are a big positive and make it easier. After all, if JPM can come in and recruit with her stone-faced personality virtually any coach could have.

And they pay their athletes quite well.

Mulkey oozes warmth. At least I hope that was warmth. Could have just been a bad bronzer.

Never cared for her, probably never will, unless she cures cancer...or baldness.

Many coaches. Gary Blair would probably pull up a chair and eat Sunday dinner and come across as family. I bet McGraw comes across as very caring and warm to recruits.

I agree on Blair. I met him after a game at USC. Wonderful person. I am going to add Sherry Coale from OU. Never met her but she always came across as polite and friendly.

GG was never a good cultural fit at Texas but she was at a disadvantage on Day 1. She was following the much-beloved and true Southern gentlewoman Jody Conradt. That Conradt is a legend at Texas made her an extremely difficult act to follow. Pat Summit may have been able to pull it off but I'm not sure there's much of a list of folks who could.

The cultural thing may also be an issue in California, where folks are more laid back. GG can be very intense, which may not play well out West.

And McCallie is not wooden. Just because she doesn't emote on the sidelines doesn't mean she's passionless. She actually has a really good sense of humor and is, in fact, one of the folks that "gets" Geno and appreciates his wit. BTW, she's a native Californian who went to college in the Midwest and coached in the Northeast for years (Maine). She's going to be able to relate to kids from a large swath of the country.

McCallie is not wooden at all. Met her once and had a very nice conversation and laughed very freely. Watched her in the Big Ten for several years a PSU games. She is always intense and focused on the sidelines and knows her stuff. I really like her as a coach. Her record at Duke has over an .800 winning percentage.

Coach G did recruit Imani Stafford to Texas while she was there, fwiw, if we're talking Cali recruiting.

I think what she did at Duke shouldn't be given short shrift because it was remarkable and hasn't quite been sustained since she's left. Her failures at Texas have been well-documented, but she inherited a mess and fielded a far more competitive team than the one Texas had the season before her arrival or the season after her departure. It's inevitable she would have another shot, and I wish her the best.
